Good morning everyone, I am currently considering how to best complement my Ikea PAX wardrobe with a chest of drawers. Specifically, I want to create a functional and visually appealing combination that provides additional storage space without overcrowding the room or limiting the flexibility of the wardrobe system. I am interested in the possibilities for connecting PAX wardrobes with chests of drawers—whether through matching dimensions, materials, colors, or even special components such as shelves, doors, or topper units. Stability and ease of use are also very important to me, as I often repurpose the wardrobe. Does anyone have experience with arranging or even integrating Ikea chests of drawers together with PAX wardrobes? Are there smart solutions to combine the two furniture pieces, either using Ikea products or custom-built options? I appreciate any ideas.

To complement IKEA PAX wardrobes with dressers, I recommend first paying attention to size compatibility. PAX systems have modular dimensions, typically 50, 75, or 100 cm (20, 30, or 39 inches) in width and 35, 58, or 68 cm (14, 23, or 27 inches) in depth. These dimensions should ideally be similar for the dresser so that the furniture fits together both visually and functionally without gaps. For a stable connection, IKEA’s own top panels, attachments, or connecting strips are suitable to prevent slipping. Using matching fronts and handles also helps create a harmonious appearance. When choosing a dresser, the Malm series is recommended, as its dimensions work well with PAX. Additionally, built-in frames or interior organizers within the PAX system can help customize storage and allow the dresser to serve as extra space for smaller items. It is also important to check the load capacity, especially if the dresser stands on the floor and heavier PAX wardrobe parts are attached.

I would like to add that combining PAX wardrobes with dressers is especially elegant and functional when colors and materials are carefully matched. PAX offers standard fronts and system colors that work well with dressers from the MALM or NORDLI series, as these are available in similar designs and finishes. Additionally, I have had good experiences placing dressers as lower surfaces for storage or seating in front of PAX wardrobes. This creates clever use of space and additional storage levels. For more flexibility, it is advisable to choose dressers with casters or handles that make moving them easier. Finally, I recommend paying attention to the different depths of the furniture to avoid impractical overhangs or gaps that tend to collect dust.

I can fully understand that this combination is not straightforward. Some time ago, I faced the exact same challenge and felt quite uncertain because I couldn’t find any building plans or recommendations that perfectly suited my space and needs. I then tried different solutions, including placing a narrow chest of drawers between two PAX wardrobes – this worked well because I used the chest as a practical surface next to the mid-height PAX units. However, I had to make sure to properly cover the back, otherwise the structure seemed unstable. If I remember correctly, a wooden board can help as a connector to bring everything together. I also want to encourage you: it’s worth experimenting with different pieces of furniture.

Regarding stability and safety, I would like to add that when combining a PAX wardrobe and a chest of drawers, securing them is essential. PAX wardrobes can be anchored to the wall using special mounting brackets. When integrating a chest of drawers, it is advisable to use additional connecting profiles or angle brackets to firmly join the furniture pieces together. This not only improves stability but also prevents the chest of drawers from shifting under load. I also recommend using non-slip mats or rubber pads between the chest of drawers and the floor or the PAX base to optimize friction and avoid damage to surfaces or furniture. Furthermore, for higher quality requirements, it makes sense to optimize storage by using internal organizers in the drawer compartments of the chest of drawers.

Here is a brief summary of my recommendations: - Ensure identical or compatible dimensions in width and depth between the PAX wardrobe and the chest of drawers. - Use matching fronts and handles for a consistent appearance. - Use connectors or clamp boards to create a secure joint. - Secure the furniture to the wall to minimize the risk of tipping. - Use chests of drawers with storage space for smaller items to complement the organization within the PAX system. These points offer a good balance of aesthetics, functionality, and safety. For most users, pairing with MALM chests of drawers is ideal, as their dimensions fit well.
