Good morning everyone, I am planning to customize my Ikea Pax wardrobe doors to better match my home interior. I am especially interested in the options for either professionally applying or doing it myself as an enthusiastic DIYer, whether by using adhesive films or paint.

I would appreciate advice on suitable materials, preparation steps (e.g., sanding, priming), the durability of different methods, and tips for achieving a smooth and long-lasting finish. Are there specific films or paints that adhere particularly well to the door material? What special considerations should be taken into account when working with the most commonly used front materials (particleboard with melamine coating)?

I look forward to your practical experiences and recommendations.

Thank you for the information so far. One point I am still concerned about is the amount of work involved and the required drying time for a paint finish. I’m asking because I cannot remove and store the doors for weeks. Are there any experiences regarding how many hours the doors need before they can be reinstalled without risking damage? I am also interested in whether sanding between coats is absolutely necessary or if it is possible to save time there. Thanks in advance!

Drying times strongly depend on the type of paint. Water-based acrylic paints are usually dust-dry after 4-6 hours, but fully durable only after 24-48 hours.
Sanding between coats is recommended to achieve a smooth surface and to prevent visible dust inclusions or runs.
Doors can be carefully installed after 24 hours, but patience is advisable for full durability.

From my experience, doors painted with water-based paint can be carefully reinstalled after 24 hours, but try to avoid applying pressure to the freshly painted surfaces.

Sanding between coats with 320-grit sandpaper smooths the surface and improves adhesion for the next layer. You can skip this step if you work very carefully and apply thin coats, but for a perfect finish, I recommend sanding.

Additionally, I would like to point out an important detail regarding applying adhesive film: the edges of Pax doors are sometimes not completely flat or are slightly rounded. The film does not always adhere perfectly here and tends to peel off.

One trick is to soften the film with a heat gun, then slowly press it down along the edges. When painting, the edges can be stabilized with multiple thin layers.

If anyone is considering using self-adhesive wallpaper or thin veneer instead of film, please make sure to test it beforehand, as the materials can vary significantly.

My recommendation for those with little experience: it’s better to cover the doors with high-quality furniture veneers, as this is easier and reversible. Painting is more labor-intensive and requires patience and care.

For veneers:
- Clean the surface
- Lightly sand the surface
- Apply slowly and with a squeegee

For painting:
- Primer and at least 2 coats of paint
- Patience during drying

Painting is worthwhile for heavy use and when you want a completely different texture.
