Hello everyone, I am currently exploring how to make the best use of Ikea Pax systems in small rooms. My question is: What strategies and combinations of shelves, drawers, clothes rails, and accessories provide the most storage space while minimizing the impact on the room? This specifically concerns small bedrooms or walk-in closets, where space is often limited and traditional large wardrobes cannot be installed. Which modifications or special tricks have proven effective for maximizing the available space? I am also interested in how to organize the interior of the wardrobes so that different types of clothing, accessories, and bulkier items like winter coats or shoes can be stored efficiently. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hello dielmer,

your question is very well put. Especially in small rooms, it is important to plan the IKEA Pax system flexibly and cleverly.

First, I recommend measuring carefully before planning and also considering the ceiling height to take full advantage of taller cabinets. Vertical stacking of shelves and drawers is particularly useful, as it often allows for more storage than you might expect.

A proven tip is to arrange the clothes rails so that short and long garments can hang separately – for example, a double rail for shirts and tops and a single rail for long coats. Drawers work well for underwear, socks, or accessories.

For shoes, IKEA offers suitable shelves and shoe racks that fit well inside the system. If you want to use the doors for extra storage, hooks or organizers can be useful for hanging belts, scarves, or ties.

If you like, I can also share some examples from my experience that are specifically designed for small rooms.

I agree, that really makes a big difference, especially when space is limited. It was a challenge for me at first as well. Sometimes I felt overwhelmed because I thought you needed a new system or had to spend a lot of money. But often small adjustments are enough.

It’s also important not to forget about accessibility. It doesn’t help if the storage space is large but you have to constantly rummage through things. That can become really frustrating.

In small rooms, I have tried a few things:
- Install clothes rails so you can reach them from the front without having to move anything
- Place drawers at the bottom for easy access
- Store bags or hats in boxes on shelves at the top to keep things organized

I also wanted to mention that it’s okay not to store everything in the closet. For example, I keep my summer clothes in a separate box on a shelf to keep the closet flexible. Maybe this perspective will help you too?

Making the most of small spaces with Ikea Pax primarily relies on systematic planning and modularity. Here are some key facts and tips:

- Modularity: The different widths (50, 75, and 100 cm (20, 30, and 39 inches)) and heights (201 and 236 cm (79 and 93 inches)) allow for almost any combination, providing flexibility for a solution tailored to the space and your needs.

- Interior fittings: Ikea offers many accessories, from clothes rails, shelves, and hinged doors to drawers and special inserts for ties or underwear. Efficiency comes from the optimal combination of these components.

- Dividing interior height: For short garments, two levels with clothes rails are ideal; for long garments, just one. Use interior lighting (e.g., LED strips) to improve visibility and usability.

- Using the doors: Hooks or organizers on the doors create extra storage space.

- Consider adjustability: Pax elements can often be extended or customized at module edges to make the most of niches.

- Use interior dimensions: Special shelves and boxes suited to the depth of 58 cm (23 inches) are recommended for shoes and accessories.

I recommend using the Ikea planner to accurately consider dimensions and avoid unnecessary loss of space.

Which strategies and combinations of shelves, drawers, hanging rods, and accessories offer the most storage space while minimizing impact on room space?

To answer this question thoroughly, I proceed as follows:

1. Measuring & Space Planning: Determine the critical dimensions of the room, including door openings, radiator recesses, electrical outlets, and clear floor space needed to open doors/drawers. These boundaries define the usable Pax configuration.

2. Modular Combination: Use the variety of Ikea Pax widths (50, 75, and 100 cm (20, 30, and 40 inches)) and heights (201 or 236 cm (79 or 93 inches)) strategically to maximize the available space—combining smaller widths can better fill a niche.

3. Internal Layout:
- For short clothing: two hanging rods one above the other to maximize vertical space usage.
- For long coats & dresses: a single higher rod.
- Drawers for underwear/accessories to organize storage more efficiently.
- Shelves for folded clothes or storage boxes.

4. Additional Elements: Consider pull-out pants racks, tie and belt holders, which require minimal space but significantly enhance storage capacity.

5. Ease of Use: An important aspect is accessibility. Doors and interior pull-outs should be planned so that all storage areas are easy to reach. For example, allow at least 50 cm (20 inches) of clearance in front of drawers.

6. Lighting: More users are installing LED lighting inside their Pax units, which helps to find individual items even in small spaces.

7. Shoe Storage: Use the same depth and rely on special shoe racks or stackable boxes.

I wonder how your room is exactly shaped—do you have niches or corners that you would like to fill with specific Pax elements? And which types of clothing need special consideration?
