Hello everyone,

I am about to move and have several IKEA PAX wardrobes that I want to disassemble and transport as efficiently as possible. My question is: What is the best way to dismantle the IKEA PAX to make transport as easy and damage-free as possible?

I especially want to focus on the following points:
- Which tools are truly necessary?
- Is there a recommended order for disassembly to make reassembly easier later on?
- What is the best way to safely pack and stack the individual parts?

The wardrobe is approximately 236 cm (93 inches) tall, 100 cm (39 inches) wide, and 60 cm (24 inches) deep, with shelves and two sliding doors. I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips, especially on how to avoid damage since the furniture parts are quite heavy.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Renlis,

I like to be very detailed when it comes to dismantling and transporting Pax systems, especially because they are sturdy due to their heavy load capacity and size, but can also be delicate if handled improperly.

First, you should really take another look at the assembly manual or save it as a PDF online. The original order of assembly provides a good guide on how to disassemble the furniture piece step by step in reverse.

Tools:
- Cordless drill with Phillips and Allen bits
- Hammer for the back panel, as it is usually attached with small nails

Potential challenges:
- Back panels, because the nails can be difficult to remove. Therefore, work patiently with a small lever.
- Sliding doors, along with their tracks and rollers, should be carefully dismantled to prevent jamming or warping later on.

I recommend taking photos at each step and collecting the screws immediately in small sealable boxes or bags – ideally labeled to indicate where they belong.

For transport, all wooden parts should be stacked vertically with protective boards to avoid scratches or warping. Slide doors should be transported flat and individually cushioned.

Do you already have any experience with furniture assembly or transport?

How exactly do you plan to transport the sliding doors? They are quite delicate and should be packaged individually.

That’s an important point, thank you! I don’t have a concrete solution for the doors yet. How do you usually pack sliding doors to prevent damage during transport?

Also, I hadn’t thought about taking photos before – good idea, thanks for that as well.

I have assembled furniture before, but rarely disassembled it for a move. So I’m not a professional, but I’m also not completely inexperienced.

It is best to lay sliding doors flat on a ceiling, with thin cardboard in between, then wrap them with bubble wrap. Ideally, transport them upright to prevent bending or jamming.

I also think it makes sense to disassemble the doors into individual parts, such as removing the running tracks. This way, the doors can be transported more easily and safely.

Otherwise, protect them as described, using blankets or plastic sheeting.

For my move, I wrapped the doors in two large towels and secured them with tape. It worked really well, and the doors didn’t get any scratches or dents. The key is to provide good cushioning, especially along the edges.
