Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to effectively add LED lighting to IKEA Hemnes furniture to enhance both appearance and functionality. I am especially interested in which types of LED systems work best with these pieces, which are mostly made of solid pine wood, how to integrate the lighting as discreetly as possible, and whether there are specific technical or design challenges to consider when working with Hemnes furniture. I would greatly appreciate any tips on installation, suitable products, and possibly experiences with modifications to the furniture structure.

Thanks in advance for the helpful information! One issue I'm still considering is cable management. Hemnes furniture has a relatively solid construction, and I would like to know if anyone has experience with routing LED strip cables in a way that keeps them hidden from the outside without making major modifications to the furniture. Are there practical and reversible mounting options? Or is it necessary to drill holes or screw in order to accommodate the LEDs and cables?

The best solution for concealing cables with Hemnes furniture is to use double-sided 3M adhesive tape to secure the cables along the inner edges. Additionally, self-adhesive cable channels can be used, which can be discreetly attached to the back panels. Drilling holes is not necessarily required. For reversible installations, cable clips with adhesive pads are also recommended.

Regarding LED integration in Hemnes furniture, it is essential to carefully consider voltage and heat conditions from a technical perspective. Low-voltage LED strips (12V or 24V) are recommended because they are safer to handle and generate less heat. When installing, ensure that the LED strips receive adequate cooling, even when embedded in wood—wood acts as a heat insulator, which can cause premature damage to the LEDs in poorly ventilated areas.

Additionally, pay attention to the quality of the power supply to ensure flicker-free lighting. Dimmers and remote controls are technical accessories that work well with Hemnes furniture, as they simplify control without requiring structural modifications.

If installation in display cabinets is planned: choose LEDs with a CRI value above 90 to optimally showcase the colors of decorative items.

Why not invest some effort and care into the furniture? In my opinion, this extreme caution about making changes often prevents truly high-quality solutions. A few small, clean drill holes or recesses can greatly simplify integration while significantly improving functionality. Sure, reversibility is sometimes a concern, but who really wants to treat a piece of furniture like a museum exhibit? I recommend being pragmatic and making careful, minor modifications for the sake of appearance.

I believe a combination of both approaches makes sense. For under-cabinet lighting on dressers and shelves, you can achieve a lot using adhesive tape and small clips without damaging the furniture. For interior lighting in the display cabinet, however, I recommend routing all cables along the back panel or within existing edge grooves, possibly with minimal drilling that can be easily repaired when moving. It is important to plan carefully before drilling, as Hemnes is made of solid wood that cannot be repaired afterwards.

I also suggest using LED strips with plug connectors that can be quickly disconnected. This keeps the furniture flexible if you move. Have you seen LED strips with quick connectors? They make later maintenance of the installation much easier.
