Hello everyone,
I am planning to use my Ikea Besta as storage, but I specifically want to accommodate large and bulky items. I am generally familiar with the Besta system, but the shelves are usually designed for smaller items. My question is therefore: How can I best modify or use Ikea Besta to store bulky things like larger boxes, books, or sports equipment without compromising stability or making it impractical? Are there any useful tips for assembly or interior organization that I should keep in mind? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Besta can also be used as an open shelving system, which offers the advantage of greater flexibility.Exactly, and here is an important tip: If you use the Besta completely open and avoid doors, you should definitely secure the back panel firmly and stably. This prevents warping under heavy loads and significantly increases safety.
Additionally, you can cut custom shelves if needed, which are not included with Besta by default, allowing you to adjust the height individually.

Furthermore, it is worth considering connecting individual Besta units to create a larger, integrated storage system tailored to the room. This allows for better and safer storage of larger objects.

Thank you for your numerous and detailed tips! To summarize, I learned that using fewer shelves can create more storage space, firmly securing the back panel is essential for stability, and using box options (also from other Ikea systems) is recommended.
I will probably put together an open Besta shelving unit to remain flexible and be able to store large items without door clearance issues.
I have one last question: Are there proven ways to adjust the height of individual compartments without using standard shelves—such as custom-made solutions or divider systems? That would be very practical to optimize the available space.
