Hello everyone,

I am considering using my IKEA Billy shelves outdoors, either in the garden or on the balcony, to store plants, decorations, and maybe some gardening tools. So, my more specific question is: How can I use Billy shelves outside without them quickly getting damaged? What typical problems occur, especially regarding moisture, wind, and sunlight? I have read that the wood is not necessarily weather-resistant. Are there any proven methods to protect or modify the shelves? I look forward to hearing your experiences and tips!

Hello abbeflo,

I’m happy to use your question as an opportunity to explain some basic facts. The Billy shelves are usually made from chipboard with a melamine resin coating – this makes them sturdy for indoor use, but they are neither waterproof nor UV-resistant.

Regarding sanding: It is completely sufficient to roughen the surface with fine sandpaper (grit 180 to 220) to improve adhesion for new paint. You don’t need to sand all the way down to the wood if the veneer is still intact, as this carries the risk of an uneven surface.

Weatherproof paints can be found at hardware stores under wood exterior paint or boat varnishes – these are formulated to resist water and UV rays. Make sure the paint is vapor-permeable, meaning moisture can escape, otherwise the wood will still swell.

Feet: You can place simple tiles or small stone slabs underneath. The important thing is that no water stays in contact with the shelf parts and that there is air circulation.

Finally, a tip: applying a thin coat of a UV-protective stain before painting can offer better surface protection. Then apply several thin layers of paint and allow them to dry well.

Good luck with your project!

One more practical tip from me: place the shelf on small rubber or felt pads, the kind normally used under furniture. They create a gap from the floor and prevent scratches or moisture contact.

Would be really grateful for detailed advice, also regarding the drying times of coatings, etc.

Typically, clear coat applied outdoors takes about 6-8 hours to become dust dry, and around 24 hours to fully cure. Always sand well between coats to ensure good adhesion! This will help achieve maximum durability.

Enjoy experimenting, and if you have any photos of your outdoor Billy, feel free to share them! 😉
