Hello everyone, I have a specific question for those with experience using IKEA Besta furniture or anyone who knows about securing larger furniture to prevent tipping. I have small children at home and want to avoid any risk of the furniture tipping over if they climb on it or play around it. My question is: What is the best way to secure IKEA Besta units against tipping? Which mechanical methods or installation techniques are effective and practical, especially concerning child safety? I’m not just looking for simple solutions, but ideally tips on proper wall anchoring or other tricks that are truly reliable and child-friendly. Does anyone here have practical experience or can recommend good products? Thanks!

The most important thing is to always securely attach the Besta shelf to the wall. IKEA usually provides a mounting kit, which you should use. Additional brackets or metal straps can increase stability. Avoid placing the shelf loosely.

Hello Glanishan,

to secure your Besta furniture against tipping over, I recommend a multi-layered approach:

- Always use the original wall mounting kits provided by IKEA, which are specifically designed for Besta units. These are matched to the construction.
- Make sure to choose the appropriate wall anchors according to your wall type (e.g., heavy-duty anchors for concrete walls, cavity anchors for drywall).
- Additionally, you can install metal brackets or profiles on the back. Some people use so-called “furniture safes” or strong tension straps that firmly connect the furniture to the wall.
- Check that the unit stands on a level surface. Floor leveling pads can help prevent wobbling.

Common mistakes include using the wrong anchors or neglecting the proper anchoring depth. Especially with children at home, the foundation of the securing is crucial. If you like, I can provide you with a step-by-step guide.

I completely agree! And to make things a bit easier: Sometimes it helps to decorate the shelf so that it doesn’t look like a climbing frame – a colorful plant pot or a lamp can work wonders 😉. Of course, this doesn’t replace proper mechanical fastening, but it might deter little adventurers a bit.

I know that feeling all too well – as a parent, you’re constantly worried! For us, in addition to anchoring to the wall, it has been effective to fill the lower shelves with heavier items and keep the upper levels light and non-toxic, just in case something tips over. While this doesn’t provide 100% protection against tipping, it does reduce the risk of accidents. And yes, it’s important to regularly remind little ones that furniture is not for climbing. It’s not an easy task, but every bit of safety helps.

Wow, what a great discussion here! 🙂 I’m happy to add a bit more: For my kids, I also used hook-and-loop straps as a safety measure to secure the shelf to the wall. This is child-friendly while still strong enough to cover the basics. The most important tip is: Always stay attentive and never leave furniture unattended when little ones are nearby!

Good luck and stay safe!
