Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an IKEA PAX wardrobe system and am generally very satisfied with it. However, one small drawback bothers me: the doors do not close with soft-closing mechanisms, which sometimes causes loud slamming and, over time, puts stress on the door hinges and the cabinet frame.

Now my question to the community: How can I retrofit soft-closing mechanisms to IKEA PAX doors? I’m looking for a solution that is not too complicated, ideally does not require completely replacing the doors, and works reliably over the long term. Are there specific damping systems that can be installed, or is it better to use original accessories from IKEA or third-party products?

Furthermore, I would like to know if special tools or craftsmanship skills are needed for the retrofit, and whether this modification can be applied to all types of doors (hinged, sliding, etc.) or if there are any limitations.

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

There are several practical approaches to retrofitting IKEA PAX doors with soft-close systems:

- IKEA offers a damping system with integrated soft-close hinges for PAX hinge doors. These can be purchased as replacements for the existing hinges and installed accordingly. It is important to ensure that the door type is compatible, as special installation requirements apply, for example, to mirrored doors or glass fronts.

- For retrofitting already mounted doors, there is the option to attach so-called damper magnets or small hydraulic dampers, which are fixed between the door and the cabinet side panel. These are available at hardware stores or online and noticeably reduce slamming.

- Some users also install universal damping elements, which are mounted separately under the door panel or on the hinge side. Attention should be paid to the maximum load capacity and the type of fastening.

- Regarding tools: usually a Phillips screwdriver is sufficient, possibly a cordless drill. For fine adjustments, Allen keys are often necessary.

- Sliding doors are a different case: IKEA offers its own soft-close tracks and guide rails, and retrofitting usually requires a complete replacement of the tracks.

In summary, I recommend checking the exact door measurements and types before purchasing, and if necessary, asking IKEA or specialist retailers specifically for compatible soft-close units. Third-party suppliers sometimes offer good solutions, but quality can vary.

I can confirm that. I retrofitted the original soft-close hinges, which can be purchased directly from IKEA. The installation is fairly straightforward:

- Remove the doors
- Unscrew the old hinges
- Attach the new soft-close hinges
- Rehang and adjust the doors

The most important part is to align the new hinges precisely; otherwise, the door may stick. Depending on the door type (for example, glass doors), you need to order the correct hinges.

For those who don’t necessarily want the original hinge solution, there is also the option of using dampers, as mentioned before. These are either glued or screwed inside the cabinet frame so that the door closes against the damper. While not as smooth as soft-close hinges, this is a more cost-effective alternative.

Basic tools are required: screwdriver, tape measure, and possibly a small cordless drill. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

To explore the topic thoroughly:

Retrofitting damping systems on IKEA PAX doors is not simply a matter of “screwing them on and done.” You need to pay close attention to the type of doors (hinged doors, folding doors, sliding doors) as well as the door material, since this significantly affects the choice and installation of the dampers.

- For hinged doors, as pikin and Peone have already explained, there is the option to install soft-close hinges. It is important to select hinges that precisely match the door type (wood, glass, mirror). For example, glass fronts require special hinges with rubber buffers.

- If you decide to apply retrofitted dampers, two main types are commonly used: hydraulic door dampers and magnetic dampers. Hydraulic dampers (e.g., small cylinders filled with oil) are more effective and offer smoother closing but require somewhat more installation effort and space. Magnetic dampers function more as shock absorbers.

- In general, precisely measuring the door width and thickness is crucial before purchasing dampers. You should also check whether the cabinet frame is suitable for mounting the dampers—space limitations can cause problems here.

- For sliding doors, note that the soft-close system is installed within the track. Retrofitting from standard tracks to soft-close typically requires replacing the track, which involves some effort since the wardrobe must be partially disassembled.

- A frequently overlooked point: adjusting the doors after installing dampers or new hinges. Pay attention to issues such as friction points, misaligned door lines, or too much resistance, and adjust if necessary.

My recommendation: Before retrofitting, it makes sense to precisely identify the existing hinge system and possibly check with IKEA service for the availability of suitable soft-close hinges. When buying from third-party suppliers, proceed with caution and pay close attention to customer reviews.

If you can provide specific information about your door type (material, dimensions, hinge type), I could offer more detailed advice.

Great question! I recently added soft-close to my PAX doors myself, and I have to say, it really improved my daily life! 🙂

I went with the original IKEA soft-close hinges – yes, they cost a bit, but the effect is fantastic! No more slamming, the doors always close gently and almost silently.

If you don’t want to do a lot of DIY, IKEA also provides good instructions, and the soft-close dampers are really easy to install. With a bit of technical understanding and a screwdriver, you can definitely do it yourself!

I also believe it significantly increases the value and lifespan of the wardrobe. So: don’t hesitate, grab a screwdriver, and give it a try!
