Hello everyone,

some time ago, I bought an IKEA Metod kitchen front with drawers and would like to retrofit a soft-close system because the drawers currently close very loudly and roughly without any damping. My question is: How exactly can I install a soft-close system on already installed Metod drawers without having to replace the entire drawer or sliding mechanism? Are there specific retrofit kits or recommended methods that are simple and effective?

I am especially interested in tips regarding the compatibility of the soft-close mechanism with the existing Metod slides, any tools I might need, and important installation details to ensure the drawers close smoothly and quietly afterward.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello Re-kristin,

your question is very well formulated and shows that you already know exactly what you want – this makes it much easier to provide help! The IKEA Metod drawers usually have a quite flexible design. The rails often already include some version of soft-close, but if you want to retrofit a completely missing damping system, you basically have two options:

- Replace the existing Metod drawer slides with soft-close versions from IKEA. This is the safest option, as everything is perfectly compatible. However, this means you will need to remove the entire rail mechanism.

- Retrofit using so-called soft-close clips or damping modules that can be mounted directly onto the existing slides. These are more universal, but usually require some DIY skills and precision during installation to ensure the soft-close function works smoothly.

It is important to measure the extension depth and height of your Metod drawers before purchasing such modules, so the dampers fit properly. As for tools, you will need screwdrivers, possibly a cordless drill, and sometimes a small Allen key. A steady hand and good lighting are very helpful, as the installation can be somewhat delicate.

If you feel confident, I also recommend removing the existing slides to carefully check the available space for the soft-close components. IKEA’s installation instructions often provide very useful tips as well.

If you want, I can send you links to common IKEA soft-close slides and example videos on how to replace them.

Best regards!

Hello Re-kristin,

you can easily replace the IKEA Metod drawers with soft-close slides. These are available as replacement parts at IKEA. Simply remove the old runners, install the new soft-close slides, and you’re done.

Alternatively, there are universal soft-close clips that can be attached to the existing slides, which also make closing quieter.

That’s true, reni45, such clips are a real option if you don’t want to replace the entire drawer slide. However, I want to add that they don’t always provide the same damping quality as integrated soft-close slides.

They usually work with a spring and a small damper mounted at the end of the slide, which slows down the drawer as it closes. It’s important to choose the correct size for the length of the slide. Sometimes you need a bit of patience to position the clips properly, as small differences can affect the result. A key tip: after installation, open and close the drawer several times evenly so the mechanism can settle in smoothly.

The big advantage: no special tools are needed, and installation usually takes less than 30 minutes.

Best regards!

That sums it up well! I easily upgraded my Metod system with soft-close clips, and it was almost like magic: from slamming shut to closing smoothly and quietly in under 10 minutes.

A few tips along the way:
- Take your time measuring and marking to avoid frustrating readjustments.
- If you’re worried about bending the parts while screwing them in – that’s actually hard to do with the IKEA standard drawers. They’re quite sturdy :-)
- A little tip from me: you only really notice the noise difference when you retrofit your kitchen. It definitely adds a bit of comfort!

Good luck and enjoy the gentle closing of your Metod drawers!
