Hello everyone, I need some advice regarding my IKEA Billy shelves. I want to replace the shelves in an older unit because they are slightly warped and damaged. My question is how to best remove and replace the shelves without having to take the entire unit apart or losing stability. Are there any specific tricks or special accessories that should be used? Also, I’m curious if there are official replacement parts that fit exactly, or if it’s better to have custom boards cut to size. Thanks for your tips!
As additional information: The shelf boards for the BILLY shelving unit typically have a material thickness of 16 mm (0.63 inches). This is standard at IKEA. If you plan to have custom boards cut, I recommend using this exact thickness to properly use the support clips.
It is also important to note that BILLY shelves hold the boards in place using small holes on the inside. Make sure the hole positions are accurate; otherwise, standard fittings will not fit. For visually appealing results, consider using veneered panels or painting them. When removing the old shelf board, apply gentle, even upward pressure; the board should come loose without excessive force.
If you have any questions about assembly, individual steps, or stability, I am happy to help.

It is recommended to ask directly at IKEA for the exact cut or replacement for the specific model. I think I will do that, thanks.

Make sure the drilling positions are correct; otherwise, no standard brackets will fit. Are there different hole spacings on newer BILLY shelves? That might explain my issue with the slightly different measurements.
Also: What about the load capacity of the shelves? Can it simply be increased by using thicker boards, or is the risk too high that the shelf unit becomes unstable?

Are there different hole spacing patterns on newer BILLY shelves? Yes, indeed. IKEA has updated several models in recent years, slightly changing the hole spacing—especially between shelves with a depth of 30 cm (12 inches) and 40 cm (16 inches). So if you own an older shelf, new replacement shelves might not fit perfectly.

The same applies here: thicker boards can support more weight, but the shelf’s built-in hole pattern and brackets must be designed for it. If you use stronger boards, you need to adjust the brackets accordingly. Otherwise, the brackets might no longer fit, and the shelf could become unstable.
My advice: if you plan to put a lot of weight on the shelves, it’s a good idea to add additional support strips underneath the boards or use shelves with metal reinforcement.
Hi, a quick tip for the DIY enthusiast: If you make your own shelves instead of using the original IKEA replacement parts, you can apply edge banding to the shelves to improve the appearance and make the boards more durable.
Exactly, that provides more stability and also looks pretty neat when the support strips are well finished. This way, you can store some heavy books or equipment on your BILLY without the shelves sagging.
One more thing: to remove the shelves, I’ve found bottle openers designed for oat milk bottles very useful – just gently pry at the edge with your fingers, not with force. If you’ve tried it already, you know the plastic pins can break easily, so be careful! :-)
