Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the problem that the doors of my Ikea BILLY shelving unit have warped slightly and no longer close properly or align flush. The doors seem to hang a bit crooked and stick when opening and closing.

My question is: How can I realign the BILLY doors so they close cleanly and straight again? Is there a way to adjust the hinges or other steps I should consider? If tools are needed, it would be great if you could also provide tips on what is best suited for this.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Imran10,

There are actually several important steps to properly align the BILLY doors that you can systematically follow to achieve the best result.

First of all: The BILLY hinges are usually clip-on hinges with adjustment options in three directions – vertical, horizontal, and depth adjustment.

1. Tools: You typically only need a Phillips screwdriver, ideally with a medium-sized head, to adjust the screws.

2. Horizontal adjustment: On the hinge, you will find a screw that allows you to shift the door left or right. This helps to line the doors up side by side, especially where they meet.

3. Vertical adjustment: There are also screws to adjust the door height. If your doors are not at the same level, you can correct this by moving them up or down.

4. Depth adjustment: The depth can also be adjusted so that the doors close flush with the cabinet without gaps or protrusions.

It is important to proceed step by step and carefully close the door after each adjustment to check the setting. If the doors are particularly hard to grip, a thorough cleaning of the hinges might help. The cabinet itself should also be as stable and square as possible.

One question: Have the doors been installed for a while and possibly warped, or is this a new issue caused by installation errors? The approach may vary depending on this.

If you want, I can also give you some tips on how to find and turn these adjustment screws optimally.

Hello Imran10,

simply turn the two screws on the hinges. One adjusts the height, the other the distance to the cabinet edge.

Usually, small adjustments are enough to realign the door properly.

If the doors stick, check whether the hinges are clean and not bent.

The BILLY hinges are usually so-called clip hinges with adjustment options in three directions – vertical, horizontal, and depth adjustment.

That is exactly right, and I’d like to add: When you look at the inside of the hinges, you’ll usually find three screws. One controls the vertical position (height), another controls the horizontal alignment (side to side), and the third adjusts the depth (how far the door sticks out from the cabinet frame).

The best approach is to start by positioning the doors as well as possible, then adjust the horizontal alignment, and finally adjust the depth.

Sometimes it can take a little while to find the optimal settings – take your time and check periodically with a spirit level to ensure the doors hang straight.

Also: If you’ve been tweaking for a while without any improvement, it can help to loosen the hinges, remove the doors, and then reattach them. This can compensate for any warping.

Since you mentioned your tools: A good Phillips screwdriver with a comfortable handle makes adjusting much easier because you can turn the screws more precisely without damaging them.

If you like, I can also send you a short instruction guide with the key points for easy reference.
