Hello everyone, I will soon be moving into a new rental apartment and would like to install Ikea Metod cabinets there. Since it is a rental, it is especially important for me to be able to remove the furniture quickly and, above all, without leaving any damage to the walls or floors.

Does anyone have experience with assembling Ikea Metod cabinets in a way that they are stable enough but can be taken down without major marks when moving out? Are there any special installation methods, fixings, or tips you would recommend?

I appreciate any advice that can help me reduce effort and potential disputes with the landlord.

I always install Metod cabinets in rental apartments without wall fixing. Instead, I use floor mounting and stabilization through connector fittings between the cabinets. This way, the wall remains undamaged.

In general, I would recommend using special mounting brackets instead of the standard fixing method with anchors and screws. These brackets are only screwed into the cabinet, not into the wall. Alternatively, clamping or tensioning devices can also be used, which provide stability through appropriate pressure.

It is important to install the cabinets in a way that prevents them from tipping over even without wall attachment, for example by using connecting profiles or adjustable feet on uneven surfaces.

Is this really sufficient from a safety perspective? Especially with tall kitchen wall units, there is a noticeable risk of tipping. Could this potentially cause issues with insurance claims in case of damage? Stability and damage-free installation are important factors, but sometimes they seem to be mutually exclusive.

That sounds interesting! I fixed my previous Metod cabinets to the ceiling using special tension profiles that can be installed without drilling into the walls. This way, there was no damage to the walls and the stability was excellent! Definitely worth trying, it’s really worth it! 😊

Thank you for the previous answers; the direction is already very helpful!

@Jamalli, I think your question about safety is very valid. So, here is a further comment from me: The cabinets should be at least kitchen countertop height (around 2 meters (6.5 feet)), so maximum stability is important. However, large visible floor fixings would be impractical, as the floors are quite delicate and should not suffer from paint scratches or dents.

Do you have any experience with alternative methods such as heavy-duty anchors with removable systems or special adhesive connections that can be removed without leaving residue? I would also appreciate tips on tools for cleanly sealing drill holes!
