Hello everyone,

I am looking for an effective way to protect my IKEA Malm furniture with a waterproof varnish. So far, the furniture is only varnished or veneered, but it is being used in the kitchen and other areas prone to moisture.

My main questions are:

- Which waterproof varnish is best suited for wooden furniture like Malm, which is mostly made of particleboard with a foil finish?
- How should I ideally prepare the surface to ensure good adhesion and durability of the coating?
- Are there any special tips for application (e.g., brush versus spray) or drying time that I should consider?

It would be great if someone with experience or expert knowledge could help, so I don’t end up with peeling spots or unpleasant discoloration later on. Thanks in advance!

Regarding the question about the suitable waterproof varnish for IKEA Malm furniture, it is important to know that these pieces are usually made of cement-bonded particleboard with a foil coating.

A traditional clear wood-based varnish will often have adhesion problems here. Therefore, I recommend using a 2-component PU varnish or a special acrylic varnish designed for plastic surfaces.

Preparation:
First, lightly sand the surface without completely removing the foil. Then thoroughly remove dust and grease, for example, using denatured alcohol.

Application:
Spraying ensures an even coating, while brushing can appear uneven. It is important to apply several thin layers with drying time in between, about 2 hours per layer at room temperature.

This results in a durable, waterproof surface with good adhesion.

Hello oskarmar,

especially with furniture like Malm, which is often covered with foil, surface preparation is crucial. If the foil is too smooth or glossy, paint adheres poorly. I recommend lightly sanding the surface first with 220-grit or finer sandpaper. Be careful not to sand too much to avoid damaging the foil.

When choosing paint, a water-based 2K acrylic or polyurethane paint is really ideal. These paints are not only waterproof but also low in toxins and more environmentally friendly than solvent-based paints.

For application, it’s best to use a fine paintbrush or a white foam roller to avoid brush marks. Alternatively, spray cans are an option—for example, products specifically designed for plastic surfaces.

Important:
Allow each coat to dry thoroughly (at least 12 hours) before applying the next one to ensure the full protective film is durable.

Sure, professionals use 2K varnishes, which is fine – but honestly, who wants to do that at home? They are expensive, have a strong odor, and are not easy to apply.

I recommend something more everyday: a high-quality, water-resistant acrylic varnish from a hardware store, for example from Remmers or a similar manufacturer. This can also achieve good results without complicated equipment. The key is "patience" and thorough sanding.

I completely agree. Even more important: anyone who thinks they can do this "quickly" will be disappointed sooner or later.

In summary: There is no single "best" method, but rather the one you can carefully prepare and carry out calmly. That way, the water-based varnish will also be durable on the Malm surface.
