Na-parHello everyone,
I use several IKEA Malm furniture pieces at home and have noticed that the surfaces are quite sensitive to scratches. This is especially concerning for tables and dressers, where items are often placed or moved around. I’m looking for a way to protect the furniture from scratches with minimal effort—so no complicated painting or hours of preparation.
Does anyone have experience or tips on how to simply and effectively protect Malm furniture from scratches? Which materials or protective products are recommended that don’t change or hide the design too much? I look forward to your suggestions!

Hello Na-par,
that’s a really valid question, especially since surfaces on simpler furniture like Malm pieces aren’t always very durable. I also have some furniture that gets scratched easily, particularly when children or pets are around.
What I personally find helpful is using felt pads under all movable parts or items that are frequently placed on the furniture. This often helps prevent minor scratches.
And very important: be patient with yourself if scratches do appear. There are ways to treat them, but it usually requires a bit more effort.
I’m curious to see what other tips will be shared.

An effective way to protect Malm furniture from scratches is to use self-adhesive, transparent plastic films that are specially designed for furniture surfaces. These films are thin, nearly invisible, and easy to apply. Two key advantages:
1. Protection against scratches and liquids.
2. No permanent alteration of the surface, as the film can be removed without leaving any residue.
Alternatively, I recommend using felt pads under objects and placing coasters specifically for drinks. This reduces mechanical stress directly on the surface.

For Malm, a matte protective film or transparent protective pads are recommended. That sounds interesting, but do you have a specific brand or product type in mind? There are many options on the market, but it’s important to find one that really holds up well and doesn’t leave any marks.

Hello Na-par,
I have had very good experiences with transparent PVC protective films from Malm furniture, which are specifically designed for furniture. Here is a brief guide:
1. Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the surface with a mild cleaner and dry it.
2. Cutting: Cut the film slightly larger than the area to allow precise edge adjustments.
3. Application: Smooth the film bubble-free using a squeegee or smoothing tool, starting from the center outward.
4. Maintenance: The film can be wiped clean if needed; avoid using aggressive cleaners.
Brands I can recommend are "Tesa Möbel-Schutzfolie" and "decomafia transparent furniture protector." Both are easy to use, do not peel off, and provide good protection.
A common mistake is applying the film to a dirty surface – this leads to air bubbles or poor adhesion. Also, inaccurate cutting at the edges can cause peeling.
I hope this helps you. 🙂
