Good morning everyone, I have a somewhat specialized question and hope that experienced members here can help. I am interested in the topic of sanding Malm wood. Malm is known to be a very hard and tough-fibred wood, so I am wondering if there are specific tools or abrasives that work especially well to achieve a smooth surface without damaging the material. Which machines, abrasives, or techniques are recommended? Are there any particular considerations to keep in mind when working with Malm wood? I look forward to concrete tips and practical experiences! Thank you in advance.

Great topic! 🙂 I have worked with Malm wood and was impressed by how the surface shines after careful sanding. I think it’s important to finish with fine-grit sandpaper—320 or even 400 grit works perfectly!

For me, a random orbital sander with variable speed was the best tool. The result was as smooth as silk! So go ahead, it’s definitely worth it!

Belt sanders with zirconia alumina sanding belts work well. Important: never apply too much pressure and sand slowly to avoid generating heat.

Wet sanding can also be tried if the wood is very hard. Choose the sandpaper accordingly and keep the moisture level low.

For sanding Malm wood, I prefer to use sanding mesh instead of paper, as it clogs less. It is also very useful for hard woods.

A belt sander or random orbital sander is suitable for the machines.

Thanks for the info! Is there any experience regarding whether handheld sanders are sufficient, or is it better to use stationary equipment? I want to treat the surface of some furniture pieces, so portability would be important, but also the quality of the surface finish.

For furniture pieces, handheld sanders such as random orbital sanders or detail sanders are usually sufficient and even advantageous because they offer more flexibility. Stationary sanding machines like belt sanders are more suitable for larger, flat surfaces and repetitive tasks.

It is important for a handheld sander to have variable speed control and an effective dust extraction system.
