Hello everyone,
I use several IKEA Malm furniture pieces at home and have noticed that the surfaces are quite sensitive to scratches. This is especially concerning for tables and dressers, where items are often placed or moved around. I’m looking for a way to protect the furniture from scratches with minimal effort—so no complicated painting or hours of preparation.
Does anyone have experience or tips on how to simply and effectively protect Malm furniture from scratches? Which materials or protective products are recommended that don’t change or hide the design too much? I look forward to your suggestions!

The film can be wiped clean if needed, but do not use aggressive cleaners. That’s a good tip. I once applied a protective film and accidentally used a strong cleaning agent – the film reacted very differently and became dull.
A suggestion from me: If you have children, test the film first in a less visible spot to see how it holds up. Small materials can sometimes react differently than expected.
Thanks for the very helpful tips so far!
Great, a step-by-step guide like this is exactly what I needed.
I plan to start with a protective film and simultaneously use felt pads under items that are frequently moved.
Does anyone have experience with other protective methods, such as special furniture varnish or waxes on Malm, that work without damaging the white finish or causing yellowing?

Unfortunately, thin plastic films sometimes react with cheap furniture paint, and waxes and polishes can yellow on Malm furniture.
Films provide the best protection against scratches.
Alternatively, protective cloths (similar to thin tablecloths) can be used if you do not want to change the appearance of the furniture.

Does anyone have experience whether other protective methods like special furniture lacquer or waxes also work on Malm?I would not recommend lacquer or wax. Malm has a smooth melamine surface that can be damaged by these treatments. Protective films are a better choice.
