Hello everyone,

I have a rather specific question regarding furniture care: Are there any specially designed cleaners for the surface of Ikea Malm furniture? I ask because I have read that some furniture surfaces – especially those with lacquer or special veneers – can be sensitive to the wrong cleaning products.

My Malm dresser has a white, smooth surface that I want to keep clean as gently as possible, without making it look dull or damaged.

Can anyone tell me if there are cleaners specifically formulated for these Malm surfaces? Or are standard household cleaners sufficient?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

May I ask what type of dirt or stains you are dealing with exactly? That way, I can give more targeted advice.

Thank you for the detailed response! The surface is used regularly, but I have small grease stains in some areas and occasionally light marks from pens.

Unfortunately, I already used a cleaner that was probably too aggressive – now the affected spot looks slightly dull and uneven.

What would you recommend to possibly restore or reduce these dull discolorations? Are there any household remedies that are gentle on the surface?

Hello,

these dull spots often occur due to overly aggressive cleaners or excessive scrubbing.

To remove grease stains while preventing further damage, I recommend a gentle approach:

- Wipe grease stains with a soft cloth and soapy water
- For marker stains, try erasing them as soon as possible with a rubber eraser
- For dull spots, you can carefully apply a very small amount of furniture polish or a special plastic care oil – test first in an inconspicuous area!

Do not use strong solvents or alcohol, as they usually worsen the dull effect.

If the dull area is larger, you might need a new coat of paint or to replace the film.

Oh dear, that doesn’t sound ideal. 🙂

I once fixed a similar mishap with a home remedy: gently rubbing a damp cloth with a little olive oil (just a small amount!) over the dull spot. This helped restore some of the shine for me, without the risk of causing widespread damage.

Try it on a small area first before treating more. And always rub dry thoroughly! 🙂

To clarify the discussion a bit:

- There is no special Malm cleaner.
- Malm surfaces are mostly made of melamine-coated particleboard.
- Melamine is scratch- and water-resistant but sensitive to solvents such as acetone, alcohol, or harsh chemicals.

Recommendation:

1. Clean with a slightly damp, soft microfiber cloth.
2. For tougher stains, dissolve a pH-neutral dishwashing detergent in water.
3. Avoid abrasive sponges or cleaners.
4. For matte areas, gently treat with furniture oil or polish designed for plastic surfaces.

An additional note: Matte areas are often surface wear, not deeper damage. Polishing can help but is not a cure-all.

That’s the key point.

I think the discussion about "special cleaners" should perhaps be expanded to include material compatibility.

Instead of asking for "special" cleaners, it would be important to know which ingredients should definitely be avoided – for example, alcohols, ammonia, solvents – and which alternatives are truly safe.

This also explains why there are no specialized products: because the material is low-maintenance, provided you are careful when choosing the cleaner.

Has anyone here already had experience using common plastic cleaners on Malm surfaces? Are there better results compared to home remedies?
