Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Malm wardrobe from IKEA and want to protect it as best as possible from moisture damage. Since the furniture is made of particleboard with a foil coating, I am concerned about potential sources of moisture, such as condensation in poorly ventilated rooms or spilled liquids. My specific question is: What practical and long-lasting methods are there to effectively and sustainably protect Malm furniture from moisture without affecting its appearance or functionality? Are there any proven maintenance products or special sealants that are suitable? I am also interested in how to best prevent moisture damage when using the furniture in rather humid areas, such as bedrooms near windows or bathrooms.
Best regards and thanks in advance for your advice!

Hi marbrin,
it's good that you brought up the issue of moisture protection for the IKEA Malm. Furniture made of particleboard is unfortunately prone to water damage because it can warp or swell quickly when exposed to moisture. Therefore, it is advisable to follow these points:
1. Location: Place the wardrobe in a dry, well-ventilated area. Avoid direct proximity to windows or radiators.
2. Climate control: A room humidity level of around 40-60% relative humidity is ideal. If humidity is higher, a dehumidifier can help.
3. Protective coating: For added protection, you can seal the visible edges and back panels with clear varnish or furniture wax. This prevents moisture from penetrating.
4. Moisture absorbers: As KINMIN4 already mentioned, silica gel or special granules inside the wardrobe are effective against mold and dampness.
5. Regular inspection: Check occasionally for damage to the laminate or scratches to address them early.
I can only confirm this! Properly treating the edges significantly improves protection of the sensitive material.
Good luck, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions 🙂

Good morning marbrin,
I read your post with interest and would like to offer a brief guide on moisture prevention for Malm furniture, as I have worked with this type of furniture for a long time.
1. First step: Choose the location carefully – avoid direct sunlight, keep away from heaters, and preferably do not place the furniture in rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms.
2. Furniture pretreatment: Although IKEA Malm already has a laminated surface, the edges and back panels are often unprotected. I recommend sealing these areas with a thin, transparent acrylic varnish. Make sure the varnish is low-odor and suitable for wood or chipboard.
3. Thorough maintenance with clear products: Furniture wax for laminated surfaces is difficult to apply because the wax often soaks in or leaves streaks. It is better to clean regularly with a mild gentle cleaner that also protects the laminate.
4. Install dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers in the room – especially during humid summer months, the air can become quite damp.
5. Avoid standing water, for example dripping at cabinet edges. If moisture does get in, dry it immediately to prevent swelling.
In summary, I recommend:
- Sealing the unprotected edges
- Protecting the furniture location
- Using moisture absorbers
- Regular maintenance and inspection
I hope this helps you!

For extra security, you can seal visible edges and back panels with clear varnish or furniture wax

Hello everyone,
I really appreciate how thoroughly you are discussing moisture protection for Malm furniture. I have personally experienced how quickly moisture can cause damage, for example, when windows are left open during rain or while airing out a room. It can feel very frustrating, especially when the furniture is newly purchased.
From my experience, my advice is to pay close attention to how your living spaces are ventilated and plan your airing so that no moisture can condense on the furniture. For example, air out the room in the morning with windows fully open for a short period, then close them – this quickly refreshes the room and lets moisture escape.
If something spills, wipe it dry immediately, as this can prevent a lot of damage.
I wish you all dry furniture and lots of enjoyment with your Malm pieces! 🙂
