Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a few Billy bookcases from IKEA because they are affordable and functional. However, I have the problem that my pets, especially my cat, keep scratching the shelves or jumping on them, which causes noticeable damage to the surfaces and corners.

My question is: how can I protect Billy bookcases from this kind of damage caused by pets without completely compromising their appearance or functionality? Are there special protective films, coatings, or practical tips I could try?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and recommendations, ideally for situations with cats that like to climb and scratch.

Thank you in advance!

Hello piletra,

first of all, an important point: Billy shelves are usually made of particle board or MDF with a veneer or lacquer finish. Unfortunately, these surfaces are not very resistant to scratches or impacts.

One way to protect the shelf is by using transparent protective films designed for furniture surfaces, often called “furniture film.” These are quite thin, appear transparent, and can be cut to size. However, you should make sure to choose films with high abrasion resistance so your cat’s claws don’t easily penetrate them.

Additionally, heavily used edges can be fitted with edge protectors or corner protectors made of plastic or rubber. Sometimes it also helps to reinforce surfaces with furniture wax or special surface sealants. Be cautious, though, as some products may leave stains on lacquered finishes.

For prevention, you can also adjust the environment: for example, by placing scratching posts or cat furniture nearby to offer your cats an alternative.

In general, I would recommend regularly checking the shelf and repairing any minor damage early to prevent bigger problems.

How large are your cats, and how often is the shelf heavily used? This information can help to give more precise recommendations.

Hey piletra! 😸

Your question is really interesting because Billy bookcases are basically the all-rounder among furniture, but cats seem to think differently, haha! ;-)

I would recommend covering the corners with velvet or felt strips. This not only reduces the damage from sharp claws but also looks nice and protects the finish.

transparent protective films, which are available for furniture surfaces as so-called "furniture film"
can be found in many hardware stores or online, and edge protection like this can really work wonders.

If your cat likes to climb high, it would be a good idea to add an extra shelf as a kind of "cat step" that is sturdy and preferably scratch-resistant – this helps redirect the cat’s climbing instinct. You can even cover such a shelf with a durable fabric, which adds variety and deters scratching.

Have you tried placing catnip toys or scratching posts near the bookcase? These often provide a great distraction.

In any case, good luck, and let us know what works best for you! 🙂

Hello piletra,

If your cat scratches the Billy shelves, I recommend simply applying double-sided carpet tape to the most vulnerable areas. Cats usually dislike sticky surfaces, which often keeps them away.

Additionally, a scratch protection spray specifically designed for furniture, available in stores, can help. Just apply a thin layer and let it dry.

Shielding the shelf directly in front of the scratch spot is also a simple solution.
