Hello everyone, I’m looking for effective ways to secure my Billy shelf so that my pets cannot access it. The main concern is to prevent my curious cats from climbing onto the shelves or knocking items down. It’s important to me that the solution remains practical and that I don’t have to completely modify the shelf. Does anyone have tips or tricks on how to make the Billy shelf pet-proof without involving major structural changes? Accessories or DIY ideas are welcome.

Simply close the lower shelves with plexiglass; that usually keeps cats away.

When securing the Billy shelf unit against pets, the material used is important: plexiglass as a door replacement is sturdy and scratch-resistant enough for cats. Alternatively, tension nets that can be attached to the front are a good option. It is important to ensure proper ventilation in case there are books or delicate items stored inside.

You can also install latches and bolts to turn them into doors. This makes access more difficult for pets.

Thanks for the responses so far. One more question: How durable are these tension nets or plexiglass panels really against a very playful cat that climbs up and scratches the elements? How often would you need to adjust or replace such solutions?

Good point regarding stability. Plexiglass sheets with a thickness of 4-6 millimeters (0.16-0.24 inches) are relatively resistant to cat claws. It is important to secure them well using sturdy screws or special brackets so they don’t shift when animals try to climb them. Tension nets, on the other hand, are more of a short-term solution and are damaged more quickly by stronger animals. I recommend plexiglass for long-lasting protection and tension nets as a temporary measure or for less aggressive pets.
