Hello everyone,
I recently set up some Billy shelves from IKEA in my home. I noticed that the location where I placed them sometimes gets a bit damp, especially in winter or when the windows are closed, and condensation can occur. I am concerned about potential moisture damage to the shelves since the material is mostly particleboard, which is not specifically moisture-resistant.
My question is: How can I best protect Billy shelves from moisture damage? What measures are effective to preserve the shelves both visually and functionally over time? Should I use special sealants or protective underlays? Or are there other proven methods?
I look forward to your experiences and tips!

To protect furniture made from chipboard, such as Billy shelves, it is important to minimize moisture exposure both mechanically and chemically.
Mechanically, this is achieved by using spacers between the floor and the furniture to avoid direct contact with potentially damp surfaces. Additionally, good air circulation behind the shelf should be ensured.
Chemically, sealing the edges with water-repellent varnishes specifically designed for wood-based materials is recommended, as well as coating the visible surfaces if they are not already sufficiently sealed.
Using moisture absorbers inside the furniture is a useful supplementary measure but does not replace the prevention steps mentioned above.
Regular inspection and, if necessary, timely reapplication of the sealant are essential to maintain long-lasting protection.

You can also use clear furniture wax creamsThis is a good, somewhat less labor-intensive tip for people who don’t want to paint. Furniture wax creates a water-repellent yet breathable protective layer and can be reapplied multiple times.

Install melamine resin-coated boards as a baseThis method is ideal for maximum protection, especially if you want to place the shelf permanently in an area prone to moisture. Just make sure to fit the board in a way that no moisture gets trapped between the shelf and the board, as this can promote mold growth in the worst case.
One last question for you, reidpau: What measures have you already tried or considered so far? That would help to better plan the next steps.
