Hello everyone,

I would like to professionally repaint my Malm furniture from IKEA because I no longer like the original finish and want to give it a new look. It is important to me that the paint job is durable and even, without bubbles forming later or the surface becoming matte instead of glossy.

What is the best process for preparing the surface? Do I need to completely sand off the original paint, or is it enough to just roughen it? Which types of paint are best suited – acrylic, polyurethane (PU) paint, or nitrocellulose? And what about the individual layers: primer, intermediate coat, topcoat?

Another important aspect is the drying time and whether it is better to use spray paint or a brush.

I look forward to your tips, preferably from your own experience! Thank you very much!

A small addition from me: The choice of paint plays a major role depending on the intended use.

If you want to paint Malm furniture for a child’s room, water-based, non-toxic paints are a good choice. They dry faster and don’t have a strong odor.

For the living room or bedroom, where the furniture is not subjected to heavy wear, PU paint is great because of its durability.

I completely agree with that.

What helped me: After sanding, wiping down with a damp cloth quickly shows whether you’ve made the surface fully matte.

For me, that step significantly improved the result – sanding the primer after the first drying to create a smooth base for the final coat.

Very important: Take your time with this, otherwise you’ll regret uneven spots later.

Good luck! :-)

Just a brief technical note regarding spray can technique: Some people use spray extenders indoors, which slow down the drying process and help reduce streaks and uneven surfaces.

Alternatively, you can work with short, thin spray bursts and allow about 10 minutes of drying time in between – this minimizes runs.

How exactly do you plan to apply the paint – with a spray can, or do you have access to a spray gun?

What finish are you aiming for? Matte, satin, or high gloss? This will affect your choice of paint and the sanding process to some extent.

Thanks and best regards!
