ᐅ How can I best screw together Malm furniture?

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several Malm dressers from IKEA and am now facing the challenge of securely and properly screwing them together. It is important to me that the connection is not only strong but also as hidden and durable as possible, especially considering that the furniture might be taken apart and reassembled during a possible move.

My questions are: Which screws or fasteners are best suited for optimally joining Malm furniture? Are there any special tips for preparing the material, such as pre-drilling or reinforcing with dowels? And how can I avoid compromising the furniture’s stability or appearance?

I would like to gather some experiences here, especially from people who have previously screwed together similar furniture and found a reliable solution. Thanks in advance!

Always drill holes smaller than the screw diameter. Use screws with countersunk heads and avoid overtightening. Anchors help if the holes fit precisely. Use glue sparingly, otherwise the membrane will swell.

I would like to briefly emphasize how important it is to choose the screws not only for stability but also with regard to future disassembly.

Don’t use too much force, or the panel will crack!

I completely agree. If you don’t want to use furniture fittings, first test in a less visible area how tightly you can screw in without damaging the material.

Wood glue is great for durability, but it can be a drawback if you want to modify the furniture later. I’ve had good experiences with self-adhesive plastic sheets that you can place between the joining surfaces to increase friction without over-tightening the screws.

I know it sounds a bit like a delicate balancing act, but it pays off for furniture that needs to be taken apart and put back together again.

How to optimally screw Malm furniture together? It’s possible! 😉

What always helps me: First, carefully plan how the furniture pieces will be joined and don’t just put the screws in randomly—think about the direction of the force.

cover countersunk screw heads with wooden plugs; it almost looks original.

That’s exactly how I do it too. If you also choose plugs that match the color well, it’s hardly noticeable.

pre-drilling a suitable hole before screwing

Definitely, that saves you a lot of trouble.

My personal tip: pay attention to the details—patience when pre-drilling, slowly turning the screws in without rushing, and you’ll enjoy the stability for a long time.

Good luck, you handled it really well! 🙂
