Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question about the IKEA Billy shelves. I’ve noticed that the doors on my Billy units are quite stiff and require a lot of force to open. This is especially inconvenient when you need quick access to the contents or have to open the door multiple times in a row. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to make the doors of the Billy shelves easier to open without having to buy replacement hinges or completely modify the furniture? Are there any maintenance tips for the hinges or small mechanical tricks that might help? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
A targeted "loosening" of the hinges is a common practice, but the closing function should not be compromised.
Usually, the IKEA Billy system allows for precise adjustment of pressure and alignment through the screws on the hinge. The spring force of the hinges themselves is not easily modified, as it is part of the closing mechanism.
My advice: Adjust the screws to minimize friction during the opening movement without losing the closing pressure.
An alternative: Replace with softer hinges, if available, or supplement with push-to-open magnets to make opening easier.

In short: the screws on the hinges allow small adjustments for depth, height, and angle. If you spend some time fine-tuning them, the doors open much more smoothly while still closing firmly.
Also, silicone spray helped me – but only a little, otherwise it attracts dust. And a bit of patience when adjusting definitely pays off 🙂

One last tip for optimal results: If problems persist after adjustment and lubrication, a controlled inspection of the door panel for warping or damage is recommended. Especially in older or frequently used Billy shelves, material deformations can occur, which increase the resistance when opening.
A suitable method is to carefully remove the door and check it for any distortions. If necessary, a slight correction through manual reshaping or replacing individual components can improve functionality.
