ᐅ How can I modularly expand Ikea Pax wardrobes after installation?

TakeoHello everyone,
I currently have an Ikea Pax wardrobe measuring 150x236 cm (59x93 inches), which I originally set up quite straightforwardly a few years ago. Now I’m considering whether and how this wardrobe can be expanded modularly afterwards without having to take everything apart completely. Specifically, I’m interested in options to add extra modules or interior fittings, such as additional shelves, drawers, or even a side extension unit, to make the best use of the space.
I’m also curious whether there are official Ikea extension sets for the Pax series that are compatible, or if I need to rely on third-party products or custom solutions.
Perhaps someone has experience with modular expansions of Pax wardrobes, especially when the system has been in place for a while and shouldn’t be rebuilt from scratch. Are there any practical tips or common pitfalls to watch out for?
I’m looking forward to your feedback and thank you in advance!

Hello Takeo,
Ikea actually offers extension frames and interior fittings that can be adapted to existing Pax wardrobes. It is important that the dimensions fit. You can purchase shelves, drawers, and interior pull-outs separately.
If you want to attach on the side, check the wall and ceiling contacts, as stability then needs to be secured differently.
A small tip: The rails and guidance systems are modular and compatible with each other, so there should be no issues.

The modules are technically compatible, but as soon as you start attaching wardrobes or mixing fittings freely, you quickly lose stability and quality.
Ikea sells individual parts that can be assembled, but not truly a practical modular expandability like you would expect from professional cabinet systems. So be careful with "modular retrofitting" – it often ends up more as a makeshift solution than a solid furniture system.
You might want to consider a completely new setup with larger modules instead – it is more expensive but ultimately saves effort and frustration.
Regarding the discussion about the expandability of Ikea Pax wardrobes, I would like to contribute some facts:
- Ikea offers the Pax series in various widths (50, 75, 100 cm (20, 30, 40 inches)) and heights, which basically allows for combining individual wardrobe units.
- There are official add-on modules and corner solutions that are compatible as long as the same depth and height are maintained. Assembly should ensure proper fixation using special angle brackets to guarantee stability.
- Interior fittings such as shelves, drawers, clothes rails, and organization accessories are modularly combinable. It is also possible to retrofit existing wardrobes without disassembly if measurements are taken precisely.
- Practical tip: Before extending, the Ikea Pax manual should be consulted, as it lists all compatible modules and connecting elements.
- Caution with custom builds or third-party products: dimensions and connection methods may differ and thus limit usability.
Conclusion: Retrofitting with modular extensions is possible if official products are used and attention is paid to dimensional accuracy and stability.
