I have been having an issue for some time now where the doors of my Ikea BILLY bookshelf regularly squeak when opening and closing. It’s especially annoying because it usually happens when it should be quiet, for example in the evening or when guests are over. I suspect the squeaking is caused by the hinge, but I’m not sure whether it’s due to the mechanism, the attachment, or a lack of lubrication.
I’m mainly interested in how to effectively and permanently eliminate the squeaking from the BILLY doors without having to replace the hinges completely. Are there specific lubricants that work particularly well, or certain methods to solve this problem?
Maybe someone else has experienced this with their BILLY bookshelf and can share tips on the best way to fix it. Thanks in advance!

First of all, your approach of identifying the hinge as the cause of the squeaking is basically correct. BILLY shelves often use simple metal hinges that start to make noise if they are not regularly lubricated.
I recommend using a high-quality lubricant designed specifically for metal hinges. A good silicone spray or a Teflon-based oil offers the advantage of not being sticky, not gumming up, and providing long-lasting smooth, quiet movement. Alternatively, a special graphite powder works very well if you prefer a dry lubricant.
Before applying, you should clean the hinges thoroughly to remove dust and old dirt—using a lint-free cloth and some solvent such as white spirit or isopropanol. Then apply two to three sprays or a small amount of dry lubricant into the hinge, move the door open and closed several times, and check if the squeaking has stopped.
If the squeaking persists, the hinge screws should be checked as well. Loose fastenings can also cause noise. Simply tighten them with a suitable screwdriver.
I hope these steps help you.

It's really a minor annoyance, especially when you want peace and suddenly hear that annoying squeak. Personally, I also checked the screws, as you suggested. Sometimes they loosen slightly over time, which can cause the squeaking.
If you’re unsure, handle the hinges carefully and after applying the lubricant, move the door normally a few times to distribute it well.

I like to use WD-40, but silicone oil works well too. Just spray and move the door briefly—that’s enough. Removing or replacing the hinges is unnecessary.
