Hello everyone, I have a BILLY bookcase from IKEA in my home that I want to make childproof because my toddler likes to pull on it and sometimes tries to climb it. My question is: What effective measures can I take to childproof a BILLY bookcase without significantly altering or damaging the furniture? I am also interested in how to ensure its stability and which products or tricks you would recommend to prevent accidents permanently. Thanks in advance for your tips!

That’s great that you want to sort this out! 🙂 First of all, I’d definitely recommend securing the shelf to the wall. There are special angle brackets or clip-on systems that are easy to install. This keeps the unit very stable and prevents it from tipping over if your child pulls on it. Also, you can equip the lowest shelves with childproof hinges or doors to keep items from falling out. And very important: don’t store small toys up high, so your child won’t be tempted to climb up! Good luck, you’ve got this!

Hello Leroyfe, I think your question is very well formulated because you are considering both safety and maintaining the shelf structure. Here is how I would approach it: First, you need to check if your BILLY shelf is standing firmly on the floor without any play – sometimes a small wedge or felt pads under the feet are enough to prevent wobbling. Then, I recommend using anti-tip devices that can be securely mounted to the wall, such as wall brackets with straps or metal bands. Also, consider fitting the lower compartments with lockable doors or at least child safety locks to prevent small items from being removed or swallowed. It might also be possible to add soft edge protectors to the corners to minimize injuries. I’m also curious: how tall is your child exactly, and do you have pets that could also affect the shelf? This could influence the recommendations further.

Be sure to secure the shelf to the wall using appropriate fasteners. Install doors or boxes with child safety locks at the bottom to prevent access to the contents. Edges should be fitted with protective profiles, which is often sufficient.

Hello Leroyfe, I completely agree with what has already been said here. A secure attachment to the wall is essential – BILLY shelves are not designed to be used as climbing frames, so installing wall brackets is necessary. Additionally, I would recommend firmly fitting all the shelves and periodically checking the screws to ensure a sturdy construction. You can install child safety locks on the doors, and if you want to make the shelf contents childproof, plastic boxes with lids are a good solution. For the corners, I suggest using special corner protectors, which are available at any hardware store and are very easy to install. This way, you can make your shelf child-safe without affecting its appearance. If you like, I can also provide you with some sources for these products.

Absolutely, edge protectors are really important! 🙂 I also have them on our BILLY – they’re great, barely noticeable but provide safety. And as already mentioned, wall mounting is a must; otherwise, you’re only one step ahead, but it doesn’t prevent tipping!
