I own a BILLY bookcase from IKEA that I would like to make childproof and, above all, stable to prevent any accidents at home. My children are still quite young and tend to climb on furniture or pull on the sides. My question is: What specific methods or products can you recommend to secure a BILLY bookcase against tipping over and to generally reinforce its structure, without making it too complicated or time-consuming? Are there, for example, reliable wall anchors, shelf reinforcements, or corner protectors? I look forward to tips based on personal experience!
It’s great that you want to make the shelf childproof! :-) The most important thing is to securely fasten the shelf to the wall. IKEA offers special brackets for this purpose, which you can mount to the wall using anchors and screws. I did this with my BILLY shelf, and it holds very firmly, even when the kids shake it! Additionally, you can secure the back panel made of thin woodboard with stronger nails to make the whole structure more stable. If your children climb on it, I also recommend attaching non-slip pads underneath to prevent the shelf from sliding. For the corners, you can use soft edge protectors; there are also nice self-adhesive options available! Good luck, it will definitely work!
Hello! Your concern is completely understandable. In fact, securing the wall attachment is the most important step to prevent BILLY shelves from tipping over. IKEA provides instructions and a mounting kit for this, but I recommend using high-quality anchors, which should be chosen according to the wall type (e.g., concrete or drywall). Additionally, you can check the back panel to stabilize the shelves: sometimes it can be reinforced with extra screws, which greatly increases stability. For the shelves themselves, metal brackets are suitable, as already mentioned, or even small clips screwed to the bottom edge to prevent them from slipping out. When preparing the shelf, always make sure that heavy items are placed at the bottom and lighter ones on top to distribute weight optimally. I hope this helps!
Thanks already for the helpful tips! I have one more question: Is it possible to improve the stability of the shelf by adding extra cross braces or supports, for example? Or is it really enough to secure the back panel and attach the shelf to the wall? I’m asking because we occasionally want to store somewhat heavier books or games there, and the shelf should remain stable in everyday use without wobbling.
