Hello everyone, I recently bought a METOD kitchen cabinet front set with several drawers from IKEA. I noticed that these drawers are relatively loud and rattling when opened and closed, which is especially annoying to me at night or during quiet moments. My question is: How can I make the IKEA METOD drawers as quiet as possible without affecting the functionality of the soft-close mechanism? Are there any practical tips, tricks, or maybe special accessories that help reduce the drawer noise? I look forward to your experiences and solutions!
Hello Mara53, your concern is easy to understand; the often noisy drawers in METOD units are a well-known issue. The noise usually results from a combination of factors: structural damping, installation accuracy, and material friction. I would recommend you first check and address the following:
- Make sure all screws and fasteners on the drawer slides are properly tightened. Loose or misaligned slides cause vibrations and noise.
- Check if the drawer fronts are properly aligned and not rubbing against cabinet corners. Even small misalignments can increase rattling sounds.
- Since METOD already features a soft-close function, adding cushioning materials at contact points can help. Silicone bumpers or self-adhesive felt pads are ideal for preventing metal-on-metal contact.
- Another option is to install special drawer dampers (extra damping units), which can often be added easily, though they do increase the cost somewhat.
Before adding accessories, I recommend carefully reviewing the assembly service or the installation instructions. Sometimes the cause is simply a slight misalignment. If you like, feel free to describe in more detail exactly how and where the noise occurs, and I can offer you even better advice.

Hey Mara53, those noises can be really annoying, I totally understand! 🙂 But don’t worry, with a little effort you can fix it!
I had quite loud rattling sounds with my METOD drawers as well. What really helped were soft felt pads placed on the contact surfaces inside the drawer. They cushion the movement and absorb vibrations very effectively.
Also, I recommend cleaning the drawer slides and lightly spraying them with silicone lubricant – this makes the slides smoother and quieter!
Don’t stress, you’ll manage it great and your kitchen will be much more pleasant! 🙂 If you want, I’m happy to send you more tips!

Since METOD already has a soft-close feature, adding targeted materials at the contact points is worthwhile. Silicone bumpers or self-adhesive felt pads are ideal here. That is exactly right: place felt pads at all contact points and sliding surfaces – afterwards, it almost never squeaks or rattles.
To supplement the previous tips:
- The IKEA METOD drawer systems use telescopic runners, which can easily produce noise if installed incorrectly. Careful alignment of the runners parallel to the side panel is essential.
- To reduce friction noise, using PTFE-coated runners or applying silicone-based lubricants specifically designed for plastic or metal guides is recommended.
- The soft rubber buffers at the end stops should be checked and replaced if worn.
- For long-lasting quiet operation, it is advisable to clean the drawer runners during every maintenance, as dust and dirt can hinder smooth movement.
Summary: A combination of correct installation, the use of felt or silicone pads, and the application of suitable lubricants provides the best results in noise reduction. If you like, I can provide a list of proven products and instructions for their use.
