Hello everyone,

I am planning to make our IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet doors more child-friendly because our toddler keeps pulling on the doors, and we are worried about possible injuries. My main question is: What proven methods or modifications are available to make the Metod cabinet doors safer for small children without significantly changing their appearance? I am thinking, for example, about options to soften sharp edges, make handles childproof, or use special child safety features that can be integrated discreetly.

Has anyone had practical experience with such modifications or perhaps alternative door types that work well with the Metod system? Additionally, I am interested to know if IKEA itself offers recommendations or suitable products for Metod doors that address this issue. Thank you in advance for your tips and advice!

Hello KUPIN58,

Regarding your topic of making the IKEA Metod cabinet doors more child-friendly, I would like to provide you with a structured guide that can help increase safety without changing the character of the doors.

1. Edge protection: Apply silicone or plastic edge guards, similar to those used on children's toys, along rough or sharp door edges. These can be easily cut to size and are available at hardware stores or online, covering potentially dangerous spots.

2. Make handles child-safe: The Metod doors have various handle options. For increased safety, consider switching to handles with rounded shapes or adding protective caps that make gripping more difficult. Another option is using adhesive edge protectors around the handle areas.

3. Magnetic child locks: These are installed almost invisibly inside the cabinets. They prevent small children from easily opening the doors since a special magnetic key is needed to unlock them.

4. Soft-close dampers: These reduce door slamming, prevent finger pinching, and minimize loud noises.

Tip: For all installations, ensure secure and solid fastening so that no small parts can fall off or be swallowed. It is worthwhile to measure carefully beforehand and, if possible, test-fit parts.

Summary: Silicone edge guards, rounded or protected handles, magnetic child locks inside, and soft-close dampers are the best measures. IKEA does not offer specific child safety products for Metod doors, but the system is compatible with various third-party accessories.

If you want more details on any of these points, feel free to ask.

In addition to Landontau’s advice, I can specifically recommend using soft-close dampers if they are not already integrated. This reduces the risk of children pinching their fingers and makes the doors close more gently.

I also suggest choosing child-friendly locks that can be installed inside and remain invisible, such as magnetic locks. Plastic hinge guards can also protect against small pinch points.

If you want a visually discreet solution, it’s best to apply these measures on the inside of the doors. On the outside, sturdy handle strips can be used that are easy to grip but don’t have sharp edges.

This way, you can improve safety without compromising the modern look of the Metod system.

This is the best advice if you don’t want to modify the doors. Just buy magnets, install them, done. Works reliably and is invisible.
