Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a few Billy bookcases from IKEA that I use in my living room for books and decorations. However, I noticed that the shelves, especially when loaded heavily at the top, are not as stable as I would like. When carrying heavy loads, the bookcase wobbles a bit, and I definitely want to prevent it from tipping over or, at worst, falling down.

My goal is to improve stability without undertaking major renovations or completely disassembling the bookcase for extensive reinforcement.

So my question is: How can I make Billy bookcases more stable without large modifications? Are there simple, effective methods or small DIY tricks that have proven successful in increasing the steadiness and overall durability?

I look forward to your tips and experiences.

The most effective method is to attach the shelves to the wall. You can use the included brackets for this purpose.

Additionally, you can stick small non-slip felt pads under the feet to minimize rocking movements.

I fully support the idea of screwing the Billy shelf to the wall. This is the most stable method and can usually be done without major difficulties.

This also includes attaching the supplied brackets to the wall, as it requires little effort and no significant changes to the shelf itself. If you prefer not to drill holes, you can use adhesive corner brackets instead; these are somewhat less strong but noticeably improve tipping resistance.

Additionally, storing heavy items at the bottom of the shelf and lighter ones on top helps lower the center of gravity, increasing stability. Inserting extra wooden panels or sturdy shelves can also reduce flexibility and make the shelf less prone to tipping.

Hey,

I think small tricks are often enough to make a Billy shelf more stable without having to become a handyman. 🙂

Exactly, those clever adhesive solutions often work great for me. I also once stuck small non-slip rubber pads under the feet, and after that it hardly wobbled at all!

Also: Sometimes it helps to push the shelf against the wall and tilt it slightly backwards so it stands more firmly. And have you ever considered attaching thin metal straps or tension belts at the back? You can fix them in hard-to-reach places without having to do much remodeling.

So, don’t panic about modifications. With a bit of creativity, you can often achieve a lot! 😊
