Hello everyone,

I have been using the Ikea Metod drawer systems in my kitchen for some time now and find them generally solid, but there are a few areas that could be improved. My main concerns are the steel runners, which sometimes stick under heavier loads, and the limited flexibility when it comes to customizing the interior layout of the drawers. I also find the assembly not quite optimal, as the drawer stability can deteriorate quickly if the adjustment is not done correctly.

So my question to the community is: How can I improve Ikea Metod drawer systems? Are there modified inserts, better runner systems, or tricks to significantly increase durability and ease of use? I would also appreciate any advice on better organization inside the drawers or on preventing wear and tear.

I look forward to your experienced tips and a detailed discussion!

The issue with sticking steel runners is well known, especially under loads exceeding 20 kg (44 lbs). A proven solution is to replace the original slides with so-called soft-close runners from third-party suppliers, which often provide greater stability and smoother operation. Additionally, I recommend lubricating the guide rails with a special silicone grease to reduce noise and sticking.

For the interior organization, Ikea uses various storage boxes, but these are often limited in both appearance and functionality. Using modular inserts from the accessories market (e.g., flexible parts made of plastic or wood) can improve space utilization. I use custom-cut dividers to securely sort different cutlery and kitchen utensils.

As an assembly aid, I have acquired tools to make drawer adjustments more precise. Be sure to check the parallel alignment of the runners and the correct hanging of the drawers – these are often the main causes of stiffness.

That’s absolutely true. The standard inserts are a bit dull and often impractical in the depth of the Metod drawers. That’s why I created some cool alternatives: instead of some plastic inserts, I use wooden strips as custom dividers. This way, you can design the compartments very flexibly depending on whether you want to organize large pots or small kitchen tools.

I also lined the undersides of the drawers with thin felt strips – this dampens noise and prevents cutlery from rattling when closing.

And yes, lubrication is essential! Just a little silicone spray, and the drawers slide like butter.

Simply lubricate the friction points well, preferably with Teflon spray. For increased stability, add metal reinforcements at the back of the drawers. Inside, you can create custom inserts that fit your specific needs.

In addition to the already mentioned lubrication of the runners, I recommend replacing the standard drawer bottoms with more durable options, such as plywood or coated MDF, to increase longevity and prevent sagging under heavier loads.

Installing additional cross braces on the sides can also help improve the drawers’ stability. There are also alternative runner systems with higher load capacity that are compatible, though these are usually available from specialized dealers.

Regarding organization, a combination of different insert modules works well, allowing you to swap them out depending on the season or kitchen needs. This keeps things flexible while making full use of the full-extension drawers.
