I have a problem with my IKEA Billy bookshelf: the drawers squeak quite loudly when pulling them out and pushing them back in. This is especially annoying if you use them several times a day. My question is: how can I fix these squeaking Billy drawers to eliminate the noise permanently? Are there any special lubricants or technical tips that have proven to work well? I would prefer not to remove the entire drawer or replace parts if there are simple solutions. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Squeaking in Billy-style drawers usually results from dry or slightly dirty sliding rails. Recommendation:

1. Fully pull out the drawer and thoroughly clean the sliding rails (e.g., with alcohol or a mild cleaner), removing any dust if necessary.
2. Then apply a suitable lubricant; silicone or Teflon sprays are ideal because they do not attract dust.
3. Regular oil should be avoided, as it collects dirt and becomes sticky over time.
4. After lubricating, slowly slide the drawer in and out to evenly distribute the lubricant.

Alternatively, check the plastic rollers. If they are damaged, they should be replaced, although this is rarely necessary. The procedure is simple and does not require removing any other components.

Exactly, silicone or Teflon spray is the best choice in this case.

I know that squeaking all too well; it can really drive you crazy 😉 I did something similar to what cassandra described—silicone spray was my savior! One small tip: sometimes it helps to allow some drying time between cleaning and lubricating. So after cleaning, leave the drawer slides open for an hour to make sure no water or cleaning residue remains. Otherwise, the lubricant can get diluted quickly and lose its effect.

I think that’s really important; otherwise, the drawer will eventually stick again, trust me! And if that doesn’t help, you’ll unfortunately have to use a bit more force and inspect the slides more closely—but for me, the spray was usually enough. Good luck! :-)

As an additional note: If squeaking persists despite cleaning and lubrication, it’s worth inspecting the drawer slides themselves. Billy often uses plastic glides that can wear out over time.

A tip: You can order these glides as replacement parts from IKEA and easily replace them yourself. Alternatively, universal plastic glides available at hardware stores can also help.

However, avoid using wax or grease, as they attract dirt and can impair function in the long term.

I agree. Only silicone spray provides a clean and lasting solution without causing contamination.
