Hello everyone,

I recently bought and assembled a Billy shelf unit from Ikea. However, I’m having quite a bit of trouble adjusting the doors. They don’t close evenly, sometimes they sag slightly or can’t be properly aligned, causing them to hit the cabinet or sit crooked.

My question is: How can I correctly adjust the doors on Billy shelf units when they don’t close properly or hang unevenly? Are there common mistakes to watch out for, or specific adjustments on the hinges that need to be made?

I have already tried adjusting the screws on the hinges but haven’t quite figured out the best way to do it.

I would really appreciate helpful tips and a step-by-step guide!

I can fully understand how frustrating it can be when doors just won’t fit properly. I once had a similar issue with a Billy shelf, where the doors kept getting stuck.

One insight from my experience: patience is key. Sometimes you have to remove and rehang the door several times until everything fits perfectly. Even small adjustments with the screwdriver can make a big difference.

If you’re unsure, a good set of instructions can help, but in the end, well-aligned doors give you a great feeling. Don't get discouraged! 🙂

Thank you very much for the detailed and clear tips. Especially the order for adjustments and the note about the mounting plate are very helpful.

I will take some time this weekend and proceed step by step – first removing the doors, then adjusting the vertical plate, loosening/adjusting the screws, and making sure to repeatedly close and check the door.

I hadn’t even considered the spring on the hinge and cleaning it. I’ll take another look with a cloth.

Thanks also for the encouraging reminder about patience – that’s definitely useful when working with screws.

If I encounter any further issues, I’ll be happy to write again.
