Hello everyone,
I recently bought and assembled a Billy shelf unit from Ikea. However, I’m having quite a bit of trouble adjusting the doors. They don’t close evenly, sometimes they sag slightly or can’t be properly aligned, causing them to hit the cabinet or sit crooked.
My question is: How can I correctly adjust the doors on Billy shelf units when they don’t close properly or hang unevenly? Are there common mistakes to watch out for, or specific adjustments on the hinges that need to be made?
I have already tried adjusting the screws on the hinges but haven’t quite figured out the best way to do it.
I would really appreciate helpful tips and a step-by-step guide!

Hello,
Adjustment issues with overlay doors often relate to the fine-tuning of the hinges. These are usually adjustable in three dimensions:
1. Vertically, you can move them to compensate for height differences.
2. In depth (horizontal, perpendicular to the door), you adjust the gap between the door and the cabinet body.
3. Laterally (horizontal, parallel to the cabinet body), the alignment is adjusted so the door stands parallel.
The most important step is to first set the height, then the lateral position, and finally the depth. Some hinges have hidden screws that control different movements.
Be careful not to tighten the screws too much, as this can cause warping. If the cabinet body is warped, the door cannot be adjusted properly.
In summary: adjust gradually with small corrections until the door closes cleanly. If the doors are sagging, it is usually because the vertical screw is incorrectly positioned or too loose.

Hello @bielias,
It's good that you have already checked the screws on the hinges. A common cause is often that not every hinge sits correctly when the door is hung. I recommend the following steps:
1. Remove the door and check if the hinges are properly attached to the cabinet.
2. Check if the hinges move smoothly and are not damaged.
3. Adjust the door while it is hanging, as @SUBEN60 described.
Usually, with Billy, you distinguish between the simpler screw-in hinges (standard) and the door catch hinges. With the latter, you can often use a small screwdriver on the front adjustment dial to bring the door closer to the cabinet or move it further away.
A tip: a small spirit level tool can help to check the alignment.
If the doors continue to sag, it could also be due to the base or the cabinet itself, if it is not perfectly square.
Best regards

I would like to add that when adjusting the Billy cabinet doors, it is essential to also check the overall installation condition of the shelving unit.
If the shelves or side panels are slightly warped, even properly adjusted doors can cause problems.
Another helpful detail: most Billy hinges have a spring that holds the door in position. If this spring is dirty or bent, the door may not swing or close properly. Gently cleaning and, if necessary, carefully reshaping it can help.
Additionally, the alignment of the doors relative to each other is important for double-door units. The gap between the doors should be even.

Remove the door from the hinges, then adjust the vertical and lateral positions on the hinges; slowly loosen the screws, move the door, and retighten.I can only agree with that. Additionally, it should be noted that vertical adjustment is usually done via the mounting plate on the cabinet. In cases like Billy, this is often a plate that can be easily shifted once the screws are loosened.

The most important step is to set the height first, then adjust the lateral alignment, and finally the depth. This order is crucial, otherwise you often end up misadjusting again.
Also important: Always make small adjustments, closing and checking the door after each step.
