Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Pax wardrobe and am now considering how to expand it modularly, as my space needs keep growing. I am especially interested in the options for extensions that allow combining the different modules without compromising stability. Are there specific dimensions or connecting elements that need to be taken into account? I would also appreciate information on additional interior fittings or accessories specifically designed for Pax. I am grateful for any tips and experiences on how to best expand the system to remain flexible and durable.

Hello batau,

your question about the modular expansion of the Ikea Pax system is very well phrased and important for anyone looking to maximize the potential of their wardrobe. Essentially, the Pax system is based on individual cabinet frames that can be connected to each other. The following points apply:
- Dimensions: The typical widths are 50 cm (20 inches), 75 cm (30 inches), and 100 cm (39 inches), depending on the model and room height of 201 cm (79 inches), 236 cm (93 inches), or 201 cm (79 inches) for the lower version.
- Connection: The cabinets are usually connected with metal connector plates, which are included by Ikea or can be purchased separately. These provide stability and prevent the units from pulling apart.
- Interior fittings: There are various inserts such as drawers, clothes rails, shelves, and organizer boxes that can be combined individually.

It is also important to consider load capacity: when expanding, make sure to use wall mounting brackets to avoid tipping hazards. I also recommend adding additional crossbars or reinforcements if wider units are combined.

Perhaps you could provide some details about your room and intended usage so I can address any special cases more specifically?

Pax can be easily expanded by placing additional wardrobe frames side by side and connecting them with two metal hinges each. It sounds simple but works very well.

Exactly, I can confirm that. When connecting the modules, make sure all the connectors are properly positioned and tightened firmly with the provided tool. Otherwise, the cabinet can become unstable.

It is also important to coordinate the frame heights carefully beforehand. Sometimes there are 201 cm (79 inches) and 236 cm (93 inches) versions, and mixing them can cause issues when attaching doors or top panels.

For additional storage, you can use internal drawers and shelves, which make the Pax system very flexible. The shelves come with small plastic holders that can be easily inserted at the desired height.

If your space is limited, you can also take advantage of the deep version of Pax, which helps in particularly narrow rooms. My recommendation: Always use wall mounting, even for a small cabinet.

In addition to the modules, you can also use corner solutions if your room requires it. Ikea also offers corner connectors in the Pax series, which help to join the cabinets neatly and make good use of the corner space.

Thanks for the tip, Katau. I’m planning to install Pax in a somewhat narrower part of the bedroom, so I’m considering the 50 cm (20 inches) width. The depth of 58 cm (23 inches) seems quite generous, doesn’t it? Would that be sufficient for hanging clothes and folded garments? I’m also wondering if the doors can be easily swapped later on when expanding the system—for example, from sliding doors to hinged doors or vice versa?
