Hello everyone,

I am planning to equip my IKEA Platsa furniture with integrated LED lights to improve both lighting and atmosphere. Since the PLATSA units are quite modular and open in design, I am looking for durable yet as discreet as possible LED modules or strips that I can install inside or along the edges of the furniture. My main priorities are:

- Easy integration without major modifications to the furniture
- Preferably warm white or dimmable LEDs to adjust the lighting mood
- Power supply and wiring concealed and neatly arranged as much as possible

Does anyone have experience or tips on which LED systems work particularly well or how to install them professionally and practically? Are there any special mounting tips for the PLATSA cabinets? I would appreciate any advice and recommendations, including sources for suitable materials.

Thanks in advance!

Flexible 12V LED strips are ideal for PLATSA. You can attach them inside using double-sided tape. Power supplies with suitable connectors, which you can hide nearby, are suitable for the power source.

Hello loleba,

Your project can be implemented quite well technically if you pay attention to a few details. I recommend proceeding step by step as follows:

1. LED selection: Warm white LED strips (2700–3000 Kelvin) are comfortable and match well with wood or white tones from PLATSA. Make sure the LED strips are dimmable if you want flexible light control.

2. Length and power supply: Measure the interior of the modules precisely. Use 12V light sources, as they are affordable and safe. Arrange the strips to evenly illuminate the desired surfaces.

3. Installation: Inside the furniture, I recommend LED strips with self-adhesive backing. For better heat dissipation, you can mount the strips on aluminum carrier profiles. If you need connectors, there are special LED snap connectors available.

4. Wiring: Hide the supply cables in the channels between the modules. If you prefer not to drill holes, cable channel silicone adhesive or double-sided tape works well.

5. Power supply unit: Choose an appropriately sized, CE-certified 12V power supply (at least 20% more power than the LED load).

6. Control: Optionally, you can connect a dimmer between the power supply and LED strips. Many LED strips support standard dimmers or can be combined with remote controls that allow color changing.

A special feature of PLATSA is that the edges are often open, which allows you to install LEDs as accent lighting on the outside as well. Just keep cable management in mind.

If you need specific manufacturers or sources, I can gladly provide some recommendations.

This is a very interesting tip – I actually had trouble hiding the cables neatly without negatively affecting the appearance. Are there any special tricks for routing the cables cleanly, especially between the modular units?

Also, I wonder if it’s worth using a professional cable management system or if simple DIY solutions are sufficient?

For neat wiring with PLATSA, I can recommend the following:

- Use flexible, flat LED extension cables that you can lay into the joints between the modules. These remain discreet and are easy to install.

- Use silicone cable channels or self-adhesive plastic channels that you attach inside the furniture sides. These are easy to fix in place and can be removed without leaving residue if needed.

- If you plan to drill holes: small openings (3-5 mm (0.1-0.2 inches)) in the back panels or sides allow for very tidy cable routing.

- When installing, make sure to route the cables as close to the edges as possible to avoid obstructing the opening of doors or drawers.

- A tip: cables matching the furniture color (white or black, depending on the piece) are less noticeable.

If you take your time, the effort is worth it—the clean look appears very professional and ensures long-lasting enjoyment of the lighting.

In addition to the previous posts, I recommend the following:

- Make sure the LED strips are from the same manufacturer and type to avoid color variations.
- Preferably use LEDs with low power consumption and good heat dissipation to extend their lifespan.
- The power supply should be equipped with surge protection.
- For wiring, 0.75 mm² (18 AWG) NYM cables are well suited, as they are flexible and adequately rated.
- Use connectors instead of hard solder joints to maintain the modularity of the PLATSA furniture.
- Leave some space between the back of the furniture and the installation to prevent overheating.

Careful planning of the electrical connection is essential to avoid safety risks and ensure clean long-term operation.
