Hello everyone,

I am planning to modify my IKEA BESTÅ shelving unit by adding casters so I can move it around the room more easily. The shelf is about 120 cm (47 inches) wide and 40 cm (16 inches) deep, and relatively heavy since I will be filling it with books. Which casters would be best suited for this? Also, how can I securely and stably attach the casters to the frame without compromising its structural integrity? Are there any special floor protectors or installation tips I should consider? Thanks for your ideas!

I recommend sturdy casters with a braking function and a load capacity of at least 50 kg (110 lbs) per caster. It is best to attach them using metal plates or suitable angle brackets, which you should screw onto the underside. Make sure the screws are not too long to avoid damaging the furniture.

To make the IKEA BESTÅ shelving unit mobile, it is recommended to use wheels made of rubber or polyurethane, as they protect the floor and provide good cushioning. Each wheel should have a load capacity of at least 40 kg (88 lbs), but a higher capacity is preferable to ensure safety and durability. Wheels with a mounting plate are best suited for attachment. These can be screwed into the designated spots on the underside. Tip: Use washers to protect the wood from tearing. Additionally, a serrated washer or spacer can help increase stability.

Caster sets with locking brakes are very useful for securing the shelving unit when needed. Screw the casters into the base plate of the shelving, which usually has pre-drilled holes, or carefully drill your own.

Exactly, that’s half the battle. I would add that the width of the casters is also crucial – narrow casters can sink in quickly under your weight, especially on carpet. Wider casters distribute the weight better and roll more smoothly. 😊

When attaching the casters under the shelf, be sure to use a spirit level. The shelf must be perfectly level; otherwise, the load on the casters will be uneven and may cause wobbling.
