Hello everyone, I am faced with the task of disassembling several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and then reassembling them, either in the same location or elsewhere. Are there tried-and-true methods or tips for taking the cabinets apart as easily as possible without causing damage? I am especially interested in which tools are useful, the best order to proceed in, and what to watch out for to keep the screws and corner connectors intact. Perhaps someone has experience with carefully taking apart the cabinet frames and fittings, as well as rebuilding them while avoiding stability issues. I look forward to your suggestions!

It is best to first completely remove all doors and drawers. Then carefully take off the back panels. Loosen screws using a cordless drill with torque control to avoid overtightening. Be sure not to use too much force when loosening corner connectors, as this can cause damage.

I’m happy to provide a brief step-by-step guide:
- First, as already mentioned, remove doors, drawers, and shelves.
- Then carefully take off the back panel, which is usually nailed or screwed, best done with a flat screwdriver using leverage.
- For the corner connectors, be sure to use the correct Allen key (usually 5 mm (0.2 inches)). Set your drill to low torque when loosening.
- Make sure not to lose any screws. It’s best to organize everything chronologically in small containers.
- Important: Before reassembling, clean all surfaces thoroughly to ensure maximum adhesion of the connectors.
- For stability, check all screws again after assembly and tighten them if necessary.

One more tip: If you want to completely disassemble the cabinet frames, be careful not to bend the connector plates (or Minifix fittings). Always use the correct tools, otherwise the screws will get stripped.

Thanks in advance for the initial tips. Can anyone also advise whether it is better to completely remove the hinges before dismantling, or is it sufficient to take off the doors and leave the hinges on the frame? I want to avoid unnecessary work while minimizing the risk of damage as much as possible.

You can leave the hinges on if you remove the doors completely. This way, you protect the hinges and have fewer parts to handle. However, when reassembling, make sure to check carefully that the hinges are not bent.
