Hello everyone,
I have unfortunately noticed some small chips on the edges of my Ikea Besta shelves, which significantly affect the overall appearance. The edges are melamine-coated and the damage likely resulted from impacts or moves. I am now looking for a discreet repair method that doesn’t involve too much effort or high costs but restores the furniture visually to a large extent.
Has anyone had experience with suitable repair kits, special markers, edge bands, or other repair techniques that have proven effective for Besta? How should I proceed to avoid a fake or noticeable look in the end?
Any tips on preparing the damaged surface or repainting would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance!

For small chips, I always use color-matched wax crayons or repair waxes. This is a good method, especially for minor damage. I would like to add that choosing the right color is crucial. I recommend testing on an inconspicuous area first, since wax can darken slightly over time due to exposure to light and temperature changes.
Additionally, the surface should be clean and free of grease before applying the wax to ensure good adhesion. For Besta furniture, cleaning with alcohol works well.
If you have larger damaged areas, however, the wax method is not ideal, as it does not fill well and does not provide long-lasting protection.

These kits allow you not only to hide small scratches but also to visually refresh entire edges quite effectively.I find it interesting that the usual recommended repair methods here are markers, fillers, and waxes. But honestly, for affordable furniture like Besta, the effort often isn’t proportional.
Why not simply sand down the chipped edge slightly, apply matching edge banding, and be done with it?
If you aim for perfection, you end up investing more time and energy than the piece is really worth. It’s worth considering whether the effort matches the benefit or if it’s better to plan an upgrade or replacement in the long run.
