Baptiste422 Feb 2022 18:23Hello everyone,
I have unfortunately noticed some small chips on the edges of my Ikea Besta shelves, which significantly affect the overall appearance. The edges are melamine-coated and the damage likely resulted from impacts or moves. I am now looking for a discreet repair method that doesn’t involve too much effort or high costs but restores the furniture visually to a large extent.
Has anyone had experience with suitable repair kits, special markers, edge bands, or other repair techniques that have proven effective for Besta? How should I proceed to avoid a fake or noticeable look in the end?
Any tips on preparing the damaged surface or repainting would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance!

You can repair damaged edges using a suitable touch-up pen for wood or furniture. It is important to lightly roughen and clean the area beforehand. Then apply a thin layer and allow it to dry thoroughly. If the edge is loose, secure it with wood glue. Afterwards, you can carefully smooth it with fine sandpaper if necessary.
Hello Baptiste4,
I hope I can really help you here, as repairing melamine-edged furniture, like those commonly found on Besta units, does require some care to make the repair visually nearly invisible.
First, it is important to thoroughly clean the damaged area, meaning the chipped edge. Dust, grease, or residues can affect the adhesion of repair products. It’s best to use a slightly damp cloth with a little dish soap, then let it dry completely.
Repair pens, also known as furniture touch-up pens, are specifically designed for these types of surfaces. They contain a colored resin base that you apply directly to the edge. You should choose a shade that matches the melamine color as closely as possible. Some hardware stores offer sets with multiple shades for mixing.
It is recommended to lightly roughen the chipped area beforehand— but very carefully, for example with very fine sandpaper (grit 240 or higher)—to help the pen adhere well.
If the edge is not just superficially chipped but a piece is missing, you can fill it thinly with a waterproof wood filler or a two-component plastic filler, then smooth it carefully after drying.
Another tip is to use self-adhesive edge banding made of PVC or similar material. This comes in various colors, some matching Ikea’s range. The edge banding is fixed onto the damaged area with an iron or a heat gun. However, this is often more noticeable visually if the color is not an exact match or the edge is not cut precisely.
Have you already decided whether you prefer a brush-friendly method (pen, filler) or a mechanical solution (banding)? Or do you still need tips for exact color matching?
Best regards

To discreetly repair chipped edges on Ikea Besta furniture, I recommend the following practical approach:
- Clean the damaged area with isopropyl alcohol or a mild detergent to remove all residues and grease.
- Carefully deburr and lightly sand the broken edges with fine sandpaper (grit 240-320) to improve adhesion of the repair material.
- Use a repair filler, such as a plastic or wood repair putty, that can be sanded after drying.
- Finish by wet sanding to blend the repair area with the surface.
- Match the color using either a waterproof paint marker in the appropriate shade or modeling paint, as the latter covers a relatively broad color range and adheres well.
Please note that achieving a 100% invisible repair on melamine surfaces is difficult because the finish is high-gloss or very smooth and resistant. The best result is achieved through multiple sanding steps and careful color matching.
Alternatively, replacing the entire edge is possible, but this is more time-consuming and labor-intensive.
To give you more precise advice: How large are the chipped areas, and are they many tiny spots or rather a few larger ones?
Best regards!

I would add that you should definitely tape off the area before using a color-matched furniture marker or paint pen to protect the surrounding surfaces.
Taping ensures clean edges and a more professional appearance. Also, I recommend applying the repair in several thin layers—allowing each to dry thoroughly—as thick layers can quickly become uneven.
If the spot is really important to you, you can carefully polish it afterward with very fine sandpaper (grit 400 or even 600) to minimize differences in gloss.
Good luck with the repair!
Additionally, I would like to add that besides repair markers, so-called "Edge Repair Kits" for melamine or laminate surfaces can also be useful. These often include self-adhesive films, glue, and touch-up pens.
Such kits allow you not only to mask small chips but also to visually refresh entire edges to a large extent. This is often more effective than spot repairs, especially for longer, chipped areas.
Another tip: Avoid using aggressive solvents for cleaning, as they can further damage the coating.
If you want more detailed information about the products, I can gladly provide details about suitable manufacturers.
