Hello everyone,

I’m about to move and have several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets that I want to disassemble with as little damage as possible, so I can reassemble them at the new location without losing quality. My question is:

What is the best way to take apart IKEA Metod cabinets during a move without damaging stacking surfaces, screws, or cabinet finishes? Are there any special tools, techniques, or tips that have proven effective specifically for the Metod series? I’m interested in practical advice that can help even less experienced DIYers avoid damage.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

To be honest, IKEA furniture is often designed so cheaply that dismantling it without damage in the traditional sense is hardly realistic.

Thank you for the critical remark; that is an important point I will take into account. Nevertheless, I want to proceed as carefully as possible to avoid unnecessary consequential damage.

Therefore, I am interested in any special techniques that, despite the apparent weaknesses of the Metod series, can help minimize damage to the carcasses, connectors, or back panels.

Are there, for example, tips for protecting the edges when prying or specific procedures for the dowel connections?

Hello kalego,

Of course, IKEA furniture is often not designed for being disassembled ten times, but with some know-how, it usually works out well.

Regarding the dowels: simply disassemble the cabinets step by step and avoid applying too much sideways pressure on the parts. Often, the joints will come apart once all screws are fully removed – never forcibly pull the parts apart.

For edge and surface protection, small foam pieces or soft cloths placed at critical points where tools or levers are applied can help.

And very important: patience! It’s better to work slowly and check the screws again if you encounter resistance. This often prevents splinters and tearing out of the material.

Take photos of each step before disassembling to make reassembly easier.

That’s a great tip, thank you!

I will also tape all screws and fittings to their corresponding parts and document each step to avoid mistakes during assembly.

Does anyone have experience with how to best use the IKEA assembly instructions during disassembly? Should they be read backwards, or used just as a rough guide?

I usually read the assembly instructions in reverse when disassembling, which helps me a lot with the order of dismantling.

First, undo the last steps of the assembly. This prevents parts from being removed too early and the furniture becoming unstable.

One practical tip: If possible, transport the parts lying flat and well cushioned to prevent edges from bumping or rubbing.
