Hello everyone,

I’m about to move and have several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets that I want to disassemble with as little damage as possible, so I can reassemble them at the new location without losing quality. My question is:

What is the best way to take apart IKEA Metod cabinets during a move without damaging stacking surfaces, screws, or cabinet finishes? Are there any special tools, techniques, or tips that have proven effective specifically for the Metod series? I’m interested in practical advice that can help even less experienced DIYers avoid damage.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I would first remove all shelves and doors, and loosen all screws before taking the cabinets apart. It’s best to keep the screws in a small container to avoid losing any.

Hello kalego,

When dismantling IKEA Metod cabinets, it’s best to follow a structured approach to avoid damage.

- Start by completely removing all cabinet doors and drawers. For this, you just need to unlock the special Metod hinges (usually with a push or lever mechanism).

- Next, take out the shelves to reduce the weight.

- Important: Document the types of screws and, if possible, magnetize or label them differently.

- Then carefully detach the back panels. These are often only stapled or screwed in. Sometimes a putty knife or flat chisel can help.

- Now you can remove the carcass panels. Slowly unscrew the brackets and joints, then carefully pull them apart. Use a rubber mallet and prying tools if needed, but never apply excessive force.

- Make sure to protect the edges of the panels with blankets or cardboard to prevent dents.

- Tip: Take photos of each step before dismantling to make reassembly easier.

I hope this helps you!

It is best to loosen screws using a cordless drill with torque control, which prevents over-tightening and damage to the wood.

This is a very important tip!

Regarding tools: a standard Phillips screwdriver or ideally a suitable bit for a cordless drill is necessary. Make sure to loosen the screws slowly to prevent stripping.

Also, be careful when removing the back panels to avoid splitting the wooden boards caused by nails or staples. If the back panels are nailed, you can gently insert a flat tool and use it as a lever to loosen the nails without damaging the wood.

To protect the cabinet surfaces, you can cover the edges with soft cloths and use a padded blanket during transport. Careful planning and a slow approach are essential to avoid damage!

To be honest: IKEA furniture is often designed so cheaply that undamaged disassembly in the traditional sense is hardly realistic. Especially with Metod, it’s common for the carcasses to become loose, chips to break off, or dowels to snap during disassembly.

My advice: It’s better to accept that a perfectly “original” reuse is not possible. Instead, check the cabinets carefully after taking them apart and replace parts if necessary, rather than trying endlessly to disassemble them without damage.

Of course, you can work very carefully, but the construction is not designed for multiple disassemblies.
