Hello everyone, I am about to move and want to dismantle my Ikea Pax wardrobe as space-efficiently as possible for transport. The wardrobe is approximately 2.00 m (6 ft 7 in) tall, 1.50 m (4 ft 11 in) wide, and 0.60 m (2 ft) deep, consisting of several components including doors and shelves. My main question is how to disassemble the wardrobe step-by-step to store it compactly without causing damage, and how to best protect fragile parts such as doors and back panels. Are there any special tips or tools that can help with taking it apart and transporting it? I also want to avoid making the reassembly at the new location too complicated. Thanks for your experiences and advice!

I basically have some experience with assembled furniture (often Ikea shelves or cabinets), but I have never completely disassembled and reassembled an entire cabinet before. Then my advice: Allow plenty of time for disassembly and document every step. Writing things down or using an app for furniture assembly can help keep track. Especially with Pax, there are sometimes hidden connection systems, so proceed carefully. If possible, before the actual move, you could practice on a smaller piece of furniture to understand how the connection systems work.
One more tip: You can easily find the drill holes of Minifix connectors again by carefully levering out the dowel sleeves with a screwdriver, to avoid misalignment later.
I just want to quickly reinforce the main point here: having a smart system for packing will really save you a lot of stress in the end. Maybe something like a "Pax moving kit" with numbered bags for screws, a box for doors plus protective materials, and your photos as a step-by-step guide. That way, the move will go smoothly – or at least be half as bad 😄.
In summary, the key points:
- Completely disassemble the carcasses
- Carefully remove doors and pack them separately with protective covering
- Remove back panels and store them flat
- Keep screws and fittings labeled and organized
- Use a cordless screwdriver with the appropriate bit
- Mark or photograph drill holes
- Stack panels flat and protect the edges
This approach ensures the most space-efficient transport with minimal risk of damage or problems during later assembly.

Henkba, if you have any final questions or something becomes unclear during the disassembly, feel free to get in touch. Especially when dismantling the Pax, there are many small details that you might not think of without experience – I’m happy to offer tips for problem-solving!
