My concern is that many Pax components are actually designed for adults, which makes reaching clothes or storing toys more difficult.
Does anyone have experience with adapting Pax to suit children’s needs? For example: Which shelves or inserts are suitable? How can you prevent children from bumping into heavy doors or sharp edges? Are there any tips for child-friendly access and secure fixings? I would appreciate specific recommendations, including solutions that can grow with the child, so the setup can be adjusted flexibly.

Does anyone have experience with adapting Pax closets to suit children’s needs? For example: which shelves or inserts are suitable? How can you prevent children from bumping into heavy doors or edges? Are there any tips for child-friendly access and secure fittings?I think your question is really important and well asked. A few years ago, I also modified the Pax for my then 5-year-old child. From my experience: I installed the lower shelves so that the most important clothing items are at child height, around a maximum of 80 cm (31 inches).
For the doors, I definitely recommend safety locks that prevent the door from slamming shut or children from pinching their fingers. I also replaced the heavy sliding doors with lighter curtains hung in front of the closet.
I found the stability of the modifications a bit challenging, so it’s better to rely on sturdy components and, if necessary, use strong, well-installed wall mountings. Especially if children climb on it, you should pay close attention to stability.
It also helped me to organize the closet together with my child – this way, they accept the storage better and know where everything is. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

How can we prevent children from bumping into heavy doors or sharp edges? From a technical and safety perspective, I recommend the following points for age-appropriate design of an Ikea Pax wardrobe in a child’s room:
- Use edge and corner protectors that soften the sharp edges of doors and cabinet components.
- Install door dampers and child safety locks to prevent doors from closing uncontrollably or too quickly.
- Securely anchor the wardrobe to the wall to avoid tipping risks caused by climbing attempts.
- For easy access to clothing, provide lower compartments at a maximum height of 90 cm (35 inches). Reserve higher sections for items used less frequently.
- Use integrated storage solutions such as baskets or drawer inserts that are stable and easily accessible.
- When choosing wardrobe doors, opt for sliding doors with a soft-close mechanism or, alternatively, wardrobe openings without doors (open shelving).
These measures comply with current safety standards and are practical for use by children of different ages.

That’s really the key – the system has to grow with the child. I gave my child small boxes inside the Pax that they can pull out themselves. This encourages independence and pride in their own belongings.
Additionally, you can add colorful handles or stickers to make it more child-friendly and playful. I also installed adjustable clothes rods that can be adapted as the child grows.
One more tip: install inner drawers or baskets so that heavy items are not stored at the top – safety comes first! It’s simply enjoyable when the child can keep things tidy on their own.
