Hello everyone, I am planning to equip my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with custom-designed handles, as I find the standard handles too plain. I am particularly interested in how to design and manufacture such handles myself without relying on external suppliers. Which materials are best suited for this purpose? What are the necessary measurements and attachment details for Metod cabinets? Are there any proven techniques or tools I should use? I look forward to your tips and ideas, especially if anyone has already made their own DIY handles or knows variants that are easy to implement. Thanks in advance for your support!

That’s a great idea—to design your own Metod handles! Basically, when designing, you should pay special attention to the exact drill hole spacing of the IKEA cabinet doors, usually 128 mm (5 inches) or 192 mm (7.5 inches). Materials like wood, acrylic, or aluminum are easy to work with and look high quality. Some use 3D printing or CNC milling if available. Simpler DIY options work well with wooden profiles that you shape and then paint. It’s important that the handles are sturdy and comfortable to grip.

What about the required dimensions and mounting for Metod?

The drill holes are standardized, so you can use the dimensions of the standard handle to avoid drilling new holes. Screws are usually M4 with about 30 mm (1.2 inches) length, which is easy to adapt.

If you like, I can also give you tips on design and surface finishing!

Simple wooden strips or aluminum profiles can often be used to easily create a handle. The drill holes, of course, need to match; otherwise, you can easily adjust the holes if you want. Screws and nuts from a hardware store are usually sufficient to securely fasten the handles.

Oh, I really like it when people want to creatively design furniture parts themselves! 🙂 Especially with Metod, there are so many possibilities because the cabinet fronts provide a great base for personalized touches. My recommendation: use wood or acrylic for your handles and try out different shapes, such as round, slim, or even organically curved designs. With some patience and the right tools (drill, sander), you can create truly beautiful unique pieces! Don’t be discouraged if everything isn’t perfect at first – practice makes perfect!

Exactly, it’s best to stick with a 128 mm (5 inch) drill hole spacing. This way, you can use the original holes and keep the installation simple. Use sturdy materials that will hold up well in everyday kitchen use. I recommend wood or metal as a base, as plastic is often too soft.
