Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some IKEA Platsa furniture for my home office, but I don’t want to just assemble it following the instructions. Instead, I’m looking for ways to personalize and visually enhance it at home. I’m especially interested in how to creatively use existing modules or highlight them through custom modifications without needing professional equipment or specialized skills. I was thinking about options like paint, handles, inserts, or combining modules.

Does anyone have practical tips on how to effectively customize Platsa furniture? I’d also appreciate experiences with materials or techniques that have worked well. Any advice on what to avoid would be great too.

Looking forward to your suggestions!

The easiest way to customize PLATSA is by using different handles or knobs.

This is definitely one of the more affordable options I had in mind as well. Are there any tips on what to consider when choosing handles, especially regarding compatibility with the PLATSA fronts?

Interior inserts: You can enhance the functionality of the interior using drawer dividers or boxes.

That sounds interesting – could you perhaps suggest which inserts or boxes work well with PLATSA?

Paint applications with spray or roller paint should be prepared by sanding and cleaning surfaces to improve adhesion.

Does anyone have experience whether sanding is absolutely necessary for veneered fronts, or if good primer alone is sufficient?

Sanding is generally the most reliable way to ensure lasting adhesion. For veneered surfaces, usually light sanding with fine sandpaper (grit 180-220) is enough.

If you prefer to skip sanding, you can use special adhesion primers designed for smooth or glossy surfaces. This often works but is usually less durable. A common mistake is insufficient cleaning of the surfaces – dust, oils, or grease prevent proper adhesion.

Regarding inserts: Flexible drawer dividers made of plastic or wood are practical. Boxes from PLATSA itself or universal organizing boxes also work well and help keep things tidy.

Another tip for customization: Cover shelves or storage surfaces with contact paper. There are many designs available, including wood or concrete finishes. This provides a fresh look with minimal effort.

When installing handles, pay attention to the drill hole patterns, as PLATSA does not accommodate all hole configurations. Measuring beforehand saves trouble.
