Hello everyone,
I am currently considering how to personalize and stylishly decorate my Ikea Pax wardrobe without compromising its practical functionality. The goal is to enhance the often very simple and utilitarian appearance of the wardrobe with personal touches. I am especially interested in ideas that creatively involve both the exterior (such as doors or frames) and the interior (shelves, back panels).
Does anyone have practical tips on materials, colors, or special decorative elements that work well with Pax?
For example, is it easy to retrofit the Pax with wall decals, wood panels, or lighting? What experiences have you had with handles, vinyl wraps, or using mirror surfaces?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Basically, I consider it useful to customize the Pax wardrobe mainly in two areas: the exterior design and the functional enhancements inside. For the exterior, replaceable handles are a simple and effective option. IKEA itself offers many alternatives, and even handle models from hardware stores can be used if the drill holes match.
Surface-changing films are also very practical, as they can be applied easily and removed without residue if needed. For more flexibility, I recommend matte or thin films that are easy to cut and adjust.
Adding LED lighting inside significantly improves usability and effectively highlights the stored clothing or items. When combined with sensor-controlled light strips, this looks very modern and increases comfort.
Regarding wall decals or panels on the outside, you should check the attachment options of the Pax doors, as their surface is not always ideal for sticking. For structural changes, the back panels can be replaced with decorative boards, but this requires some craftsmanship and adds weight.

Interesting approaches, vinli. However, I find using films somewhat risky, as they can easily peel off or show wear around door edges with frequent handling. Additionally, it’s important to consider that some films are not breathable, which could lead to moisture buildup underneath—especially problematic inside cabinets.
Therefore, for surface changes, I would rather recommend paint finishes or decorative door fronts with replaced veneers. Although more labor-intensive, these options tend to be more aesthetically pleasing and durable in the long term.
Furthermore, I wonder whether cabinet lighting might be better integrated using professional furniture lighting solutions instead of simple LED strips, which can sometimes involve visible cables or less tidy mounting.
What are your experiences with permanently installed lighting systems in the Pax?

Surface-changing films are very practicalThat’s true, the durability of these films depends greatly on their quality and application. High-quality vinyl films specifically designed for furniture are more durable and resistant to abrasion and moisture. However, it is indeed important to pay special attention to carefully treating the edges.

Lighting inside the cabinet is better integrated with professional furniture lightingI completely agree here. It is advisable to use LED strips designed for furniture—they usually come with well-protected cables and suitable mounting systems. Many suppliers also offer battery-powered solutions with motion sensors, allowing use without annoying cable clutter. A fixed electrical connection is usually unnecessary without professional expertise, as battery systems are often entirely sufficient.
Regarding sustainability: Paint finishes are certainly an alternative, but if you want to avoid damaging the Pax, I recommend self-adhesive design films as a reversible option that can be replaced if needed.
Wow, this topic is really exciting! I’ve customized my Pax with a few personal highlights that have been very well received. Here are some of my favorite ideas:
- Mirrors on the inside of the doors. Perfect for checking your outfit as you get dressed.
- Interior lighting with motion sensors! Not only practical but also creates a great atmosphere when searching for something in the evening.
- Additional wooden strips as small shelves on the sides, providing wonderful space for decorative elements like plants or decorative boxes.
- I replaced the handles with vintage brass ones – this adds a nice contrast to the modern design.
Since I enjoy experimenting with materials, I also removed some plastic covers and replaced them with CNC-milled wooden pieces that feature patterns. It feels much more personalized this way.
What I especially like: these small details turn the wardrobe into a real eye-catcher without affecting its functionality! So don’t hesitate to try something new.
