Hello everyone,

I am planning to customize my Ikea Pax wardrobe doors because the standard colors don’t quite fit my room design. My question is: How can I paint Ikea Pax doors individually without compromising the surface or functionality? I am especially interested in which preparations are necessary, which types of paint work best (e.g., lacquer, spray paint, chalk paint), the best application methods, and whether special sealants are needed to improve durability.

Are there any particular techniques that have proven effective, and what mistakes should definitely be avoided? I would appreciate tips based on practical experience, including recommendations for necessary tools or drying times.

Thank you in advance!

Regarding how to customize Ikea Pax doors with paint, there are several important points to consider.

- Preparation: Thoroughly clean and lightly sand the doors (fine sandpaper, grit 220) to improve adhesion.
- Paint selection: Water-based acrylic paints or suitable spray paints designed for smooth surfaces work best. Chalk paint can be used but usually requires sealing.
- Application: Ideally apply several thin coats of paint or spray, allowing each layer to dry completely.
- Sealing: Acrylic-based clear coat protects against scratches and moisture.
- Tools: Quality paintbrushes, foam rollers, or spray cans.

A common mistake is applying paint too thickly or not sanding the doors enough, which leads to poor adhesion. It is also best to remove the doors to enable clean and precise work.

In summary, a recommended process is: thorough cleaning → light sanding → priming (optional) → apply thin paint layers → intermediate sanding → sealing.

That’s a good point, but I would add that it’s also important to carefully consider the type of surface. Ikea Pax doors are usually melamine-coated – which isn’t necessarily ideal for standard paints, as they often have poor adhesion.

Therefore, it makes sense to use a primer specifically designed for melamine surfaces. This primer creates the necessary bond between the paint and the surface.

Also, I wonder if sealing is really necessary for all types of paint, or if, for example, high-quality spray paints already provide sufficient protection. Are there any reliable long-term experiences regarding this?

Does anyone here have experience with which combinations of primer, paint, and sealant actually work best?

A few months ago, I repainted my Pax doors using spray paint (water-based acrylic) and I’m very happy with the results! 🎉

Here’s what I did:
- Removed the doors and placed them on stands in the garage
- Lightly sanded the surface
- Applied a primer specifically designed for plastic/melamine
- Sprayed four thin coats of paint, allowing 30 minutes of drying time between each
- Did not use an additional sealant since the paint has a matte finish and is very durable

After some time, the paint feels very sturdy and the surface is no longer as sensitive as before.

My most important tip: always work in a well-ventilated, dust-free environment to avoid unwanted particles sticking to the paint.

I can only encourage you to keep going—the result is definitely worth it! 😄

That’s correct. A primer specially formulated for melamine or plastic surfaces can be used without any issues. These are usually so-called 2-component primers that ensure the subsequent paint layer adheres permanently.

Whether a sealer is necessary depends on the level of use. For doors that are used heavily (shelves, wardrobes), I recommend applying a protective topcoat. Clear lacquer provides long-term protection and improves scratch resistance.

For touch-ups or small damages, it is also helpful if the clear lacquer can be renewed locally.

Regarding drying times, I have found that acrylic paints dry fully at room temperature (20–22°C / 68–72°F) after about 24 hours, and sealer should be applied no earlier than 12 hours after painting.
